DVB terrestrial television is used across much of the world, particularly in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and parts of Asia-Pacific. The best available public global figure, dated November 2023, says DVB-T and/or DVB-T2 had been implemented or adopted in 147 countries—not that 147 countries use DVB-T alone. DVB-T2 is a later, distinct generation of the standard.

Where is DVB-T used?

DVB terrestrial systems are widespread, with the strongest broad regional presence in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and parts of Asia-Pacific. DVB’s public overview says DVB solutions are used in most parts of the world. Its underlying DVB/EBU/BNE DTT Deployment Database, dated November 2023, counts DVB-T and/or DVB-T2 as implemented or adopted in 147 countries worldwide. DVB’s deployment data combines the two generations, so it is not a count of countries using original DVB-T only.

The same database reports that digital terrestrial television (DTT) services were on air in 82% of the world’s countries, representing 91.3% of its population. Those figures cover DTT generally, not just DVB systems. DVB also notes that about ten countries in the combined DVB-T/DVB-T2 count had pay-DTT only, so adoption does not necessarily mean free-to-air channels are available.

How do regional systems differ?

Regional patterns help explain where DVB fits, but they are not a country-by-country service map. DVB’s overview describes these broad patterns:

  • Package:1 x TV Antenna,1x Adapter | Net:217.8g.
  • Europe, Africa, and the Middle East: DVB terrestrial systems are widespread. As historical context, an account of the 2006 Regional Radiocommunication Conference says participating countries in these regions agreed on a frequency plan for an all-digital environment based exclusively on DVB-T. That history helps explain DVB-T’s reach but is not a current inventory. DVB’s account of RRC-06
  • North America: ATSC is the dominant terrestrial system in DVB’s regional summary. DVB-T should not be assumed to be the local broadcast standard.
  • South America: ISDB-T is the dominant terrestrial system in DVB’s summary.
  • China and Japan: DVB’s overview describes each as using a self-developed terrestrial system.
  • Parts of Asia-Pacific: DVB systems are used in some places, but the regional label alone does not establish which system a particular country uses.

These are high-level patterns, not a substitute for checking the relevant country’s regulator or broadcaster. Countries can also have mixed systems or be transitioning between generations.

What does “used” mean in the country counts?

A standard can be selected or adopted before a network is operating; a network can be operating before services are on air. These are different deployment stages. The detailed DVB country database tracks standard choices, network status, DTT milestones, and service information, and is maintained with the EBU and Broadcast Networks Europe. It is available to DVB members rather than as a full public country list. DVB’s deployment data

  • Package: 1 x TV antenna with TV male connector | Weight: 29.3g

That distinction matters when interpreting the 147-country figure: it combines implemented or adopted DVB-T and DVB-T2, and it includes some pay-DTT-only cases. It does not by itself say that every counted country has active, free-to-air DVB-T services today.

How do DVB-T and DVB-T2 differ?

DVB-T2 is the second-generation terrestrial standard, not another name for DVB-T. ITU’s handbook distinguishes countries using DVB-T only, DVB-T2 only, and both. DVB’s implementation guidance describes DVB-T2 as offering significant benefits over DVB-T and covers the receiver and tuner implementation chain. Do not assume a receiver that supports one generation will support the other. Check the local broadcaster’s standard and generation, then confirm the receiver’s specifications before buying. A tuner may also need the right codec support for local services; antenna suitability depends on local frequency bands and reception conditions.

What do the dated global figures actually show?

Published totals use different dates and definitions, so they should not be read as a current, comparable count of countries using DVB-T alone.

How can you check whether DVB-T works where you live?

  1. Identify the local broadcast standard and generation. Check your country’s regulator or public broadcaster for whether services use DVB-T, DVB-T2, or another system such as ATSC or ISDB-T.
  2. Confirm that services are actually on air. A country’s adoption of a standard does not establish that a network or service is operating in your area. Check local coverage and service information.
  3. Match the receiver to the service. Verify support for the required DVB generation, tuner, and codecs in the receiver’s specifications. Do not infer DVB-T2 support from a DVB-T label.
  4. Check antenna and reception requirements. Match the antenna to local frequency bands and your reception conditions, including whether indoor or outdoor installation is appropriate.
  5. Check whether the channels are free-to-air or pay-DTT. The global adoption count includes countries where pay-DTT is the only service reported, so confirm access requirements before choosing equipment.

Is there a definitive current country list?

A complete public, current country-by-country list is not established by the sources above. DVB describes its detailed database as regularly updated, but access is limited to members. The surfaced ITU country portal is a dated transition snapshot rather than proof of every country’s present status. For a named country, use its regulator or public broadcaster to verify the current standard, generation, service status, and coverage.
