As of October 6, 2026, America PAC had spent about $31 million on 2026 races, and roughly four-fifths of that went to seven U.S. Senate contests that WIRED described as close or toss-up. Most of the money was spent opposing Democratic candidates rather than supporting Republicans. The totals below are disclosed spending, not proof that spending decides outcomes, and they change as new filings are processed.
What the disclosed spending shows
The figures that matter most come from WIRED’s live tracker, which derives its race-level totals from America PAC’s Federal Election Commission filings and records payments for ads, mailers, and texts. The tracker’s totals are dated October 6, 2026. Read them as a snapshot of that date.
| Measure | Figure | Period or date | What kind of figure it is |
|---|---|---|---|
| Total spending on 2026 races | $31 million | As of October 6, 2026 | Filed spending, per WIRED’s tracker |
| Spending in seven U.S. Senate contests | $24.8 million | As of October 6, 2026 | Filed spending, per WIRED’s tracker |
| Opposing vs. supporting, all races | More than $2 spent opposing a Democrat for every $1 supporting a Republican | As of October 6, 2026 | Ratio reported by WIRED |
| Opposing vs. supporting, Senate races | About $3 opposing for every $1 supporting | As of October 6, 2026 | Ratio reported by WIRED |
| Cumulative receipts for the cycle | More than $50.3 million, almost all from Elon Musk or his company | Through June 30, 2026 | FEC filing as summarized by FactCheck.org |
| Independent expenditures supporting federal candidates | About $87,000 | Through June 30, 2026 | FEC filing as summarized by FactCheck.org |
| Spending in the 2024 cycle | $261 million (WIRED); $261.2 million (FactCheck.org) | 2024 cycle | Filed totals; about 95 percent of funding came from Musk, per WIRED |
| Planned field program | $100 million to $120 million | Reported in 2026; described by FactCheck.org on September 24, 2026 | Reported authorization or plan, not confirmed spending |
The two tracker-era figures and the June filing figures come from different dates and different kinds of records. They should not be added together or compared as if they described the same period.
Where the money is going
The largest pattern is opposition. WIRED’s reporting puts the overall ratio at more than two dollars spent opposing a Democrat for every dollar supporting a Republican, and about three to one in Senate races. Support for Republicans is real, but the filings describe a campaign that spends more to pull voters away from Democratic candidates than to lift Republican ones.

Texas: opposing James Talarico
Texas shows the pattern clearly. WIRED reported that America PAC had spent more than $9.4 million on ads opposing Democrat James Talarico and $1.8 million backing Republican Ken Paxton. The largest single Texas expenditures were two $1.3 million digital media buys against Talarico. WIRED also said the PAC had not bought television ads in that contest. The reporting does not break the $9.4 million down by medium beyond those two large buys, so readers should not assume the entire amount ran online.
The seven Senate contests
WIRED described the seven Senate races as close or toss-up contests that could shape control of the Senate. The $24.8 million figure is the combined total across them as of October 6. The tracker is the source for race-level breakdowns, and those totals will move as payments are reported.
Filed spending and reported plans are different things
Three kinds of numbers appear in coverage of this PAC, and they answer different questions.

- Filed spending is money the PAC has reported to the FEC or that WIRED’s tracker has recorded from filings. The October 6 race totals fall in this category.
- Fundraising is money raised. FactCheck.org’s account of the June 30, 2026 filing says the PAC had raised more than $50.3 million for the cycle, almost all from Musk or his company. Raising money is not the same as spending it.
- Planned or authorized spending is a stated intention. FactCheck.org, citing a New York Times report that relied on two people briefed on the plans, described a reported authorization for a $100 million to $120 million field program in at least eight states. That is an authorization or plan, not evidence that the money has been spent.
What the planned field program covers
According to the same FactCheck.org account, the planned focus included Senate contests in Alaska, Iowa, Maine, Michigan, and Ohio, with possible activity in North Carolina, Georgia, and Texas. House races in California, Wisconsin, and Washington were also expected to be targets. Treat this as the planned map. The filings are the record of what has actually been spent.
Support and opposition are separate records
An independent expenditure is spending by a committee on communications that support or oppose a candidate, made without coordination with that candidate’s campaign. A contribution is money given to a candidate or committee. The FEC lists these as distinct record types. A reported amount “backing” a candidate and a reported amount “opposing” another are both independent expenditures, but they tell different parts of the strategy and should be read separately.
How to check the numbers yourself
The FEC publishes committee records for every federal political committee, including receipts, disbursements, cash on hand, contributions, independent expenditures, and filed reports. Its PAC research guide describes these records, and its data pages offer committee and candidate summaries and downloadable files.

- Open the committee’s filed reports and confirm which period each report covers.
- Review the independent expenditure records, filtering by candidate or date where the portal allows it.
- Download the relevant data file and compare its totals with the tracker. Small differences are expected because of filing schedules and processing time.
The political case, in the PAC’s allies’ words
Axios reported on July 29, 2026 that James Blair, identified by Axios as President Trump’s senior political adviser, said: “America PAC was an essential partner for our historic GOTV operation in 2024, and their return for 2026 is a huge boost for Republicans across the country.” That is a political ally’s characterization of the PAC’s role. It is not an independent assessment of the PAC’s effect on turnout or results. The Axios piece also includes comments from America PAC spokesperson Andrew Romeo.

What the numbers cannot show
The filings document how much was spent, where it was directed, and in what form it was reported. They do not show whether the spending changed any votes or will change any result. A large share of spending against a candidate is not evidence that it moved voters, and a planned field program is not evidence of door-to-door or phone contact that has already happened. Any claim about impact needs evidence beyond the campaign finance record, and none of the sources cited here provides it.
The reporting also has a time limit. The October 6 race totals, the June 30 receipts and independent expenditures, and the 2024 cycle totals are each tied to their own dates. A newer filing can change any of them.
