Parker Solar Probe observations have linked patches of solar-wind switchbacks to magnetic funnels rooted near the Sun’s visible surface. The finding narrows where at least some switchbacks originate, but it does not establish how they form. NASA identifies plasma waves and magnetic reconnection as possible mechanisms.
What is a solar-wind switchback?
The solar wind is a stream of charged particles flowing outward from the Sun, carrying magnetic fields with it. A switchback is a brief reversal or sharp bend in that magnetic field. In NASA’s visualization, the illustrated field direction turns almost 180 degrees (NASA Scientific Visualization Studio).
Parker Solar Probe found switchbacks to be common in the inner solar wind, prompting the question of where these magnetic structures begin.
What did Parker Solar Probe find about their origin?
NASA’s account of the finding says data from Parker’s sixth solar flyby, when the spacecraft was less than 25 solar radii from the Sun, showed patches of switchbacks with a higher proportion of helium than other elements. Those patches aligned with magnetic funnels emerging from the photosphere—the Sun’s visible surface—in regions between supergranules (NASA, 2021).

The alignment and helium signature point to a source region near the solar surface for at least some switchbacks. They are evidence about location, not proof of the process that creates a switchback. NASA’s 2022 Parker mission summary also connects switchbacks with magnetic funnels while describing their formation as an open research question (NASA Science, 2022).
Do scientists know what causes switchbacks?
No. NASA describes two candidate explanations, but the observations cited here do not decide between them:

These are proposed mechanisms, not confirmed explanations. NASA’s accounts identify the source-region connection as a step toward understanding the structures, while leaving their formation unresolved (NASA, 2021; NASA Science, 2022).
How does the separate jetlet finding fit in?
A related but distinct study examined small solar jets called jetlets. In a January 2023 report, NASA described them as a few hundred miles long and said researchers calculated that their combined energy and mass could supply “most, if not all” of what is observed in the solar wind (NASA, 2023).

That is a study estimate about a possible contribution to the solar wind’s energy and mass—not a settled consensus, and not the same result as locating switchback patches near magnetic funnels. The jetlet work was motivated in part by switchback observations, but it addresses a different question: what may help fuel the solar wind.
