If files seem to have disappeared from your Chromebook, start in the Files app: check Recent, search for the filename, then inspect Downloads, Google Drive, and Trash. Files may also be stored in Android app folders, Linux files, or a connected USB drive. Downloads is local storage, and Google warns that a Chromebook may delete downloaded files when it runs low on space.
Find the file in the Files app
- Open the Files app and select Recent to see files you have used lately. Sort the list by name, size, type, or date if that helps.
- Use the search control in the upper-right corner of Files, or search from the Launcher.
- Open Downloads to look for browser downloads and other files saved locally.
- Open Google Drive and check the relevant folder, including My Drive or a Shared drive. Make sure Files is using the Google Account where you expect the file to be.
- Look under My files > Play files for files used by Android apps. If a folder is not visible, open the Files menu and show the Play folders.
- If you used Linux, check the Linux files environment. Linux files are separate from ordinary Downloads and have their own backup and restore process.
- For a USB drive or SD card, connect it and look for its name in the Files app’s left column. Eject it from Files before disconnecting.
Files can also live in other cloud services or shared locations. Chromebook support includes cloud file systems and SMB shares, though what appears depends on the services configured on the device. If a Drive location is unavailable, check the internet connection. Google’s Files app guidance explains how to browse and manage these locations.
Know which storage location you used

Chrome normally downloads files to Downloads, but a save dialog can direct a file somewhere else. Google describes Downloads as storage that may be cleared when space is low; that warning does not mean Drive files are deleted in the same way. The file was saved somewhere unexpected
Check the other locations in the table, especially Drive, Play files, and Linux files. If you use more than one Google Account, the file may be in Drive under a different account.

Chromebook storage was low
Google says a Chromebook may delete downloaded files to free space. To see what is using local storage, open Settings > System preferences > Storage management. Review Downloads, offline files, browsing data, Android storage, and other users. Google’s storage management help describes these categories.
The file was deleted
Many files deleted in Files go to Trash, but Google says some deletions are permanent. Items in Trash are permanently deleted after 30 days. Downloads files deleted through the permanent-deletion flow cannot be undone.
The file is in cloud storage, but it is not appearing
Confirm that you are online, signed in to the right account, and looking in the right folder. If a Drive location cannot be reached, check your connection and allow time for syncing.

The file is on removable storage
Make sure the drive or card is connected and appears in Files. Chromebooks support a range of file systems, including FAT16, FAT32, exFAT, and NTFS, but a particular drive may still be unsupported or fail to mount. If it is not recognized, inspect it on another computer before taking action. Google’s external-device guidance warns that formatting erases the drive’s files.
The Chromebook was reset
A factory reset erases local user data on the Chromebook’s hard drive, including Downloads. It does not delete files stored in Google Drive or on external storage. Google explains the effects and backup steps in its factory reset guidance.
Can you recover deleted files?
Restore a file from Trash
- Open the Files app.
- Select Trash.
- Select the file and choose Restore from trash.
Google says Trash items are permanently deleted after 30 days. Its guidance also notes that some deletions bypass Trash, so not every missing file will be available to restore.

If the file was deleted from Downloads
Google’s Downloads guidance says deleting a file there is permanent and cannot be undone. If the deletion happened through a flow that moved it to Trash, check there; otherwise, search Drive and any other backups or copies. Do not assume that a recovery app or clearing cache will restore a file that was permanently deleted or automatically removed.

If low storage may have removed it
Review Storage management and free space carefully, but do not treat that step as file recovery. Check whether a copy exists in Drive, an external drive, or another backup location before making further changes.
If the file was on an external drive
Check whether the device mounts in Files. If it does not, inspect it on another computer or make a backup before changing its format. Formatting erases the contents; it is not a recovery step.

Before a factory reset
Back up local files first. A reset removes Chromebook hard-drive user data, including Downloads; files in Drive and on external storage are not erased by the reset. On a school- or work-managed Chromebook, check with the administrator before resetting.

Move important downloads out of Downloads
Move files you want to keep to My Drive or another permanent folder. Google’s direct advice is to put a file in a permanent folder if you want to save it. You can also change Chrome’s download destination or enable Ask where to save each file before downloading so the location is clear. See Google’s download-storage instructions.
Keep a second copy of important local files
Copy important files to compatible USB or external storage, checking that the drive works with your Chromebook and has enough capacity for the files you need to preserve. Eject it safely when finished. A second copy helps protect files going forward; it does not recover a file that has already been permanently deleted. Google also documents external storage as a way to transfer files in its Chromebook transfer guidance.

Back up Linux files separately
Use the Linux backup and restore workflow in Chromebook settings. Google’s Linux backup guidance describes a .tini backup; restoring it to another Chromebook requires a matching architecture, such as x86 or ARM.
Check before deleting to free space
Storage management can show which categories use space. Review files before deleting them, and confirm that anything important has a separate copy.
