Designers can find free images for commercial projects through stock libraries, Creative Commons search tools, and public cultural collections. But a free commercial-use license does not prove an image was made by a person, and the sources below do not guarantee that every image is non-AI. If human-created imagery is essential, check the individual asset’s provenance and any current AI label or policy before using it.
Start with these free image sources
These services and collections are useful places to search, not blanket clearances for every image or every use. Check the current terms on the exact asset page, especially when an image includes recognizable people, logos, artwork, or private property.
Pexels
Pexels offers free photos and videos, allows editing, and does not require attribution. Its license restricts uses such as selling unaltered copies, implying endorsement, redistributing content on another stock platform, and trademark use. It is a practical starting point for contemporary web, marketing, and social content. Read the Pexels license before use.

Unsplash says images are free to use for most commercial, personal, and editorial projects without permission or credit. “Most” matters: review the terms and the context of the particular image rather than assuming every commercial use is covered. Its Help Center statement was dated August 8, 2025. Check Unsplash’s commercial-use guidance.

How to assess whether an image is non-AI
A platform’s commercial-use license answers a rights question; it does not establish how an image was created. None of the sources above is verified here as guaranteeing that every image is human-created. Photorealism and a stock-site label are not evidence of human origin.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Look for a named photographer or institution, an original collection record, and creation details that make the image’s provenance traceable.
- Check the asset page and the platform’s current AI labels or published policy. Labels and policies can change, and an absent label is not proof that an image is non-AI.
- If human origin is a strict requirement and the available record does not establish it, choose another image with clearer provenance.
Check rights for the exact project
Permission to use an image does not necessarily clear everything visible in it. Rules may differ depending on whether the design is an advertisement, editorial work, a product for sale, or a standalone resale of the image. Pay particular attention to these cases:
Best Value
- People: A license to the photograph may not resolve privacy or publicity rights for an identifiable person.
- Logos and brands: Permission to use the image does not automatically grant trademark rights or allow an implied endorsement.
- Artwork and property: Copyright or other permissions may apply to depicted works or locations, separately from the photo’s license.
- Resale and redistribution: Some services restrict selling an unaltered image or uploading it to another stock library. Check the terms for the intended format and use.
For Creative Commons or public-domain results, verify the rights statement on the original item record. For platform-licensed stock, read the current platform terms and any asset-specific notices.
A practical workflow before publishing
- Search a suitable stock library or collection using the subject, orientation, and project use you need.
- Open the individual asset page. Record the creator, source URL, license, date accessed, and any restrictions.
- Check the asset page and the platform’s current AI labeling or policy. If non-AI origin is essential but unclear, select an asset with stronger provenance.
- Review recognizable people, logos, artwork, and property against the intended use, including advertising, editorial, products for sale, or resale.
- Keep a screenshot or project note of the asset record and terms as they appeared when you downloaded the image.
Which kind of source should you use?
| Source type | Useful for | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Free stock libraries such as Pexels, Unsplash, and Pixabay | Contemporary photos and other polished web or marketing imagery | Current platform terms, asset-specific notices, and rights in depicted people or brands |
| Open-license search tools such as Openverse and Creative Commons search | Finding material across Creative Commons and public-domain sources | The original item page, exact license, attribution requirements, and modification conditions |
| Public and institutional collections such as the Library of Congress | Historical, archival, or specialist material | Item-level rights statements and any qualifications recorded for the work |
Free stock is often the fastest route to contemporary imagery. Open-license search and public collections broaden the range, but usually call for closer review of each item’s rights and provenance.
