In the United States, you can add cash to a PayPal Balance account at participating retail locations, including CVS Pharmacy, Walmart, Dollar General, Family Dollar, 7-Eleven, Walgreens, and Kroger. PayPal advertises more than 90,000 locations. In the app, choose a store and show the cashier the generated barcode with your cash; alternatively, use your PayPal Debit Card at the register. The fee is up to $3.95 and varies by store. PayPal’s Add Money page and its in-store cash reload page describe the service.
This is a way to add money to a PayPal Balance account—not to load cash onto any card that carries the PayPal name. A PayPal Balance account is required; the PayPal Debit Card is one way to present the reload at checkout.

How to add cash to PayPal at a store
- Open the PayPal app at a participating retailer and go to your balance or account area.
- Choose Add Cash or Add Cash at Stores, then select the retailer.
- Generate the barcode and show it to the cashier along with the cash. The barcode expires after 15 minutes; if it expires, generate a new one.
- As an alternative to the barcode, present cash at the register and swipe your PayPal Debit Card, or hand the card to the cashier to swipe.
- Keep the receipt and check your PayPal Balance. PayPal says funds are usually available within minutes; its help page says the balance is added within 15 minutes. Treat that as a typical expectation, not a guarantee.

Which stores accept PayPal cash reloads?
PayPal advertises 90,000+ cash reload locations in the United States. Its pages name these retailers and store chains:

A chain appearing on PayPal’s list does not mean every branch participates. Check the retailer options in the PayPal app for a location near you before making a trip.
Fees, reload amounts, and limits
PayPal’s US pages, accessed October 7, 2026, state an in-store reload fee of up to $3.95; the actual charge can vary by store. The current help page gives these transaction and account limits:

Can you add money without visiting a store?
Yes. If you have an eligible funding source, PayPal also documents adding money from a confirmed bank account or an eligible Visa or Mastercard debit card. A bank transfer usually takes up to five business days; an eligible debit-card transfer typically takes seconds. PayPal’s cited instructions do not establish a fee for either transfer, so check the app and current terms rather than assuming one is free. If a cash reload does not work
- Check that you selected a participating location in the app; not every branch in a listed chain necessarily takes reloads.
- If the barcode has expired, generate a fresh one. PayPal says it expires after 15 minutes.
- Check that the amount is within PayPal’s stated reload range and account limits, and ask the cashier whether the store has a lower limit.
- If the app will not let you add money, check your account status for verification requirements or limitations, then consult PayPal’s current cash reload help page.
These location, fee, and limit details are for PayPal’s US service; do not assume they apply in other countries.
