Australians can investigate Epic Games Store, GOG, Fanatical and Green Man Gaming for R18+ PC games without relying on a credit card—but the exact game, age check and checkout options vary. Steam is the notable obstacle: a September 2026 report says Australian users needed a credit card even to view R18+ store pages. Buying a key elsewhere can be an option for some games, but it still means redeeming on Steam and following Steam’s account rules.
If you’re asking, “Where can Australians buy R18+ PC games without a credit card?”, start by checking the game’s Australian classification, then confirm the seller’s listing, age-assurance requirements and payment choices at checkout.

First, check whether the game is actually rated R18+ in Australia
Search the title in the Australian Classification database. R18+ is legally restricted to adults. The rating is not simply a label for violent games: simulated gambling is one basis for an R18+ classification. Since 22 September 2024, games with chance-based in-game purchases such as paid loot boxes are classified M, while simulated gambling games remain restricted to adults and classified R18+.

The eSafety Commissioner says, “Users will have to complete some form of age assurance to access online games classified R18+ by the Australian Classification Board.” Its guidance distinguishes R18+ games from other games, which do not require these checks under this requirement. The Commissioner also notes that relevant app-distribution services must have appropriate checks for R18+ downloads before 9 September 2026. That does not mean every store uses the same verification process.

Which stores are worth checking?
There is no single store that guarantees every R18+ title, payment type or age-check route. Compare the exact Australian listing and checkout rather than relying on a seller’s general payment page.
| Store | What to know | Payment without a credit card |
|---|---|---|
| Epic Games Store | Epic requires age verification to download or purchase R18+ games from its store from 9 September 2026. The game is bought through Epic. | Epic lists non-card age-verification options, but the available payment methods for a particular Australian order must be checked at checkout. |
| GOG | PC Gamer reported that GOG had no Australian age-verification system at the time of its 23 September 2026 comparison. Availability is title-specific. | GOG lists PayPal and paysafecard among its payment options, but does not establish that every option is available for every Australian order. |
| Fanatical | PC Gamer reported that it sold some R18+ Steam keys and did not prompt Australian buyers for age verification at the time of its report. Stock varies by game. | Check the exact Australian checkout; the report does not establish payment methods for every order. |
| Green Man Gaming | PC Gamer reported that it sold some R18+ Steam keys and did not prompt Australian buyers for age verification at the time of its report. Stock varies by game. | Check the exact Australian checkout; the report does not establish payment methods for every order. |
| Steam | PC Gamer reported that Australians needed to provide a credit card even to view R18+ store pages; a standard bank debit card did not meet that requirement at the time. | The report does not identify a non-credit-card route for accessing those R18+ pages. |
Epic: non-card age checks, but payment is a separate question
Epic’s Australian age verification is handled through Kids Web Services (KWS). Its help page lists four methods:
Rank #2
- Gift Cards are shipped active and ready for use.
- This card is non-reloadable. No cash or ATM access. Funds do not expire. If available funds remain on your card after the valid thru date has passed, please call customer service for a replacement card. A one-time purchase fee applies at the time of checkout. No fees after purchase.
- To access your card information safely, type the complete website address shown on your Gift Card (MyGift.GiftCardMall.com) directly into your browser's address bar. Don't use search engines or shortened versions of the website address, as these may lead you to fake or fraudulent sites. Do not provide any Gift Card details (example: Card Number) to someone you do not know or trust. If you believe you've reached an illegitimate website, contact cardholder service at 1-888-524-1283. Be cautious of phishing sites, there are a variety of scams in which fraudsters try to trick others into paying with gift cards.
- To report your Lost or Stolen Physical Visa Card, call Customer Service 24/7 at 1 (888) 524-1283 to cancel your Gift Card as soon as you can. You will be asked to provide the Gift Card number and other identifying information.
- Use your Visa Gift Card in the U.S. everywhere Visa debit cards are accepted, including online.
- Selfie age estimation: Yoti estimates age from a selfie.
- Government-issued ID: Veriff processes the ID.
- ConnectID: Confirms age through a bank.
- Credit-card validation: Stripe validates a credit card.
Epic says ConnectID does not share banking information with ConnectID or KWS, and that selfie and ID images are deleted after verification. These are Epic’s descriptions of its process, not independent privacy audits. The age check is not the payment step: Epic’s published methods establish that several verification options do not require a credit card, but they do not establish the payment methods available for every Australian game purchase. Check your chosen game’s checkout.

Epic says users under 18 cannot access R18+ content, and parental consent does not unlock it. Its verification requirement does not change access to games already owned or games rated below R18+.

GOG, Fanatical and Green Man Gaming: check the title and checkout
GOG
GOG’s support page lists PayPal and paysafecard, alongside credit cards and other local payment methods. That global list is not a guarantee that either method will appear for a particular Australian order. Confirm the game’s Australian availability and the options shown in the checkout.
Fanatical and Green Man Gaming
PC Gamer’s 23 September 2026 comparison reported that both stores sold some R18+ Steam keys and did not prompt Australian buyers for age verification when purchasing those games at that time. The report also found that their catalogs differed: neither store carried every title discussed. Treat these as dated observations, not promises of current stock or future policy. Verify the exact listing and Australian region eligibility before paying.
Rank #4
- An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
- If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
- Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.
- Redemption: Online
Buying a Steam key elsewhere does not bypass Steam’s rules
A Steam key bought from a third-party seller still has to be redeemed on Steam. It is a different place to buy the key, not a way to avoid Steam’s account requirements or regional restrictions. Valve’s agreement prohibits disguising your residence to get around regional restrictions; PC Gamer’s report quotes Valve as warning that IP proxying or other methods of disguising location may lead to account termination. Don’t use a VPN or proxy for that purpose.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhy the title says “pretty much everywhere but Steam”—and why to qualify it
The phrase is a useful shorthand, not a guarantee that every other store sells every R18+ game or accepts every non-credit-card payment. The current evidence identifies Epic as a direct store with several non-card age-check methods, GOG as listing alternatives such as PayPal and paysafecard, and Fanatical and Green Man Gaming as sellers of some Steam keys. Those are distinct claims: an age-verification option is not a payment option, and a store’s general payment list does not confirm what a specific Australian checkout will accept.

Steam’s reported credit-card requirement concerned access to R18+ store pages in Australia, not every Steam purchase. Because platform rules and implementation can change, check Valve’s current Australian flow before relying on the September 2026 report.
A practical way to choose a seller
- Look up the Australian rating. Find the game in the Australian Classification database and confirm whether it is R18+.
- Check the exact game at each store. Verify that the listing is available in Australia and is either a direct game purchase or a key for another platform.
- Read the age-check requirement. For Epic R18+ games, choose an available verification method; other stores may have different policies.
- Inspect the checkout before committing. Payment options can depend on the title and Australian order. A method listed on a general support page may not be offered for that transaction.
- For a Steam key, check redemption and region eligibility. Make sure it can be activated in Australia and that you are prepared to redeem it on Steam under Steam’s account rules.
Card use in Australia is context, not a store guarantee
The Reserve Bank of Australia’s 2025 consumer-payment survey found that debit cards accounted for 49% of payments and credit and charge cards for 23%. Those figures are shares of consumer transactions, not the percentage of Australians who own either type of card. The survey was conducted from October to early December 2025; the RBA summarized it in May 2026. They help explain why payment choice matters, but say nothing about which methods a particular game store accepts.
