Sometimes typing just gets in the way. I built a speech-to-text tool to make speaking another way to get words onto the page: dictate a thought, then work with the text. That idea is useful, but the details of my tool matter. I can’t substantiate its supported systems, languages, transcription engine, privacy design, or accuracy here, so I won’t guess. If you want to dictate now, built-in tools may already fit your workflow.
What a speech-to-text tool changes
Speech-to-text changes how the first draft enters a document. Instead of composing every sentence through a keyboard, you speak and receive text you can review. That can help when typing feels like an obstacle, but transcription is only the input step. It does not automatically mean the tool can revise, format, or insert text wherever you need it.
For my tool, the specific editing and insertion workflow is not established here. Treat it as a way to explore speech as an input method rather than assume it offers hands-free control of a whole computer.
Try a built-in option before adding another tool
Google Docs and Slides
Google documents voice typing for editing documents in Docs and for speaker notes or captions in Slides. The browser controls the speech-to-text service and how speech is processed before text is sent to Docs or Slides. The feature requires browser microphone access; Google does not say that you need a separate microphone. See Google’s voice typing instructions.

Windows voice typing and Voice Access
Microsoft says Windows voice typing uses online speech recognition technologies. Voice Access guidance also describes recognition options, including one that filters non-speech background sounds such as keyboard typing or a bang against a table. That is a noise-control option, not a guarantee of accurate transcription. Details are in Microsoft’s Windows voice typing guidance and Voice Access guidance.
ChatGPT dictation
ChatGPT’s dictation workflow records an audio message and returns a transcription as text you can edit before submitting. It is a conversational message workflow; it does not establish that dictation inserts text into every desktop application. The FAQ also points business users to Enterprise Privacy information. These options serve different destinations and processing models. The cited documentation does not provide a controlled comparison of transcription speed or recognition accuracy.

Choose based on your operating environment, where the resulting text must appear, whether you need to edit before sending, and the product’s current speech-processing and noise-control options.

Check microphone access and speech processing
Voice input needs microphone access, but that does not mean you need dedicated external hardware. Check the permission requested by the app or browser and confirm which microphone it is using. Before dictating sensitive material, review the current product’s speech-processing settings and documentation. Google assigns processing to the browser-controlled service, while Microsoft identifies online recognition for Windows voice typing; those statements do not establish that either service is local, retains no audio, or is suitable for every sensitive use.

Dictation can be worth trying when getting a rough passage onto the page is more important than entering it by hand. It may be less convenient when the task requires precise formatting, quiet surroundings, or many small edits. A transcription still needs review, and the available documentation does not support a universal claim that speaking is faster or more accurate than typing.

The useful test is practical: dictate a short, non-sensitive passage in the app where you need the text, then check whether the result is editable and whether the cleanup required suits your work. If a built-in option handles that workflow, there may be no need for another tool.
