Use PNG for an Open Graph image when it contains transparency, a logo, a screenshot, a diagram, or small text that must remain crisp. PNG is lossless, so it avoids the ringing and block artifacts JPEG can add around hard edges. Choose JPEG for photo-led cards without transparency when a smaller file matters. WebP can reduce bytes and retain transparency, but make it your sole asset only after testing every crawler and social platform you target.
PNG, JPEG or WebP: the decision in one minute

The Open Graph protocol’s complete example uses image/jpeg, but the protocol also defines image dimensions and alternative text; it does not require JPEG for every card. See the Open Graph protocol.
Why PNG protects text, logos and interface details
Lossless encoding preserves hard edges
JPEG is designed for continuous-tone photographs. Its lossy compression can create ringing, mosquito noise and block boundaries around high-contrast text, one-pixel rules and icons. Those defects become obvious when a social platform scales a card down. PNG stores the image losslessly, so the pixels you export remain the pixels a crawler receives (unless the destination recompresses its own preview).
Transparency is useful during design
PNG has an alpha channel. You can export a logo or product cutout without a background, place it over a gradient or brand color in a template, and preserve partially transparent edges. The published OG image can still have a solid background; transparency is most valuable when composing variants or letting a downstream system add the background.

When PNG is the wrong default
Large photographs, film stills and noisy textures contain many pixels that PNG cannot compress efficiently. A PNG export of a photo may be dramatically larger than a visually equivalent JPEG. If the card is photo-led, has no transparent regions and contains only modest overlay text, start with JPEG and inspect the actual file size and preview.
Is WebP safe for social previews?
Google describes WebP as a format with lossy and lossless compression that can produce smaller web images, and the standard documented in RFC 9649 includes alpha transparency. That makes WebP technically suitable for many OG designs, including transparent graphics.
Safety here means crawler support, not image quality. The Open Graph protocol page does not promise that every crawler accepts WebP. A platform may ignore an unsupported MIME type, fail to fetch it, or display a stale cached fallback. Before publishing WebP as the only og:image, fetch the URL as an unauthenticated client and validate the preview on every network that matters to your audience. If you cannot test a destination, use PNG or JPEG instead.

Use 1200 × 630 pixels as the starting canvas
A 2026 cross-platform guide lists 1200 × 630 pixels (a 1.91:1 ratio) as a canonical size for Facebook, LinkedIn, Discord, Slack, WhatsApp, iMessage, Threads, Bluesky and Mastodon, and reports PNG and JPG as acceptable there. Keep a safe area for cropping
Place the title, logo and any call to action well inside the edges. Some clients crop or change the displayed ratio, especially on compact mobile cards. Test both the full image and the reduced thumbnail; text that is legible at 1200 pixels may be unreadable at the final card size.
Export deliberately
- Use RGB or sRGB unless a destination explicitly requires another profile.
- For PNG, remove unused metadata and choose a sensible compression level; compression changes file size, not pixel fidelity.
- For JPEG, export at a quality setting that leaves text clean, then compare the resulting bytes with PNG.
- For WebP, test both lossless and lossy exports; lossy mode can introduce the same edge damage you were avoiding.
Publish complete Open Graph metadata
Serve an absolute HTTPS URL in og:image. Declare the MIME type when known and provide dimensions and alternative text:

A repeatable format-selection workflow
- Inventory the pixels. If the design is mostly a photograph, classify it as photo-led. If it is a screenshot, logo, diagram or typography-led composition, classify it as graphics-led.
- Check alpha needs. Preserve transparency in the source or template with PNG or WebP. JPEG cannot store an alpha channel.
- Export two candidates. Make a PNG for graphics-led work and a JPEG for photo-led work. Compare file size and inspect 100% crops around lettering and diagonals.
- Test WebP only with a fallback plan. Validate fetching and rendering on each social service before removing the PNG or JPEG URL.
- Set metadata and cache deliberately. Update the absolute URL when you need to force a platform to fetch a changed asset; crawlers often cache previews.
- Inspect real previews. Check desktop and mobile cards, dark and light contexts, and the smallest size at which your headline must remain readable.
Common failure modes and fixes
The card is blank or shows an old image
Usually the crawler cached a prior response, the URL is not public, or the server returned a redirect, HTML error page or wrong MIME type. Open the exact absolute URL in a private browser, inspect its response headers, and publish a versioned filename when replacing an image.
Text looks fuzzy despite using PNG
The destination may have recompressed or downscaled the preview, or the source text may be too small. Increase type size and safe margins, export at 1200 × 630, and inspect the platform’s actual thumbnail rather than the source file alone.
The image is too large
Photographic PNGs are the common cause. Convert that card to JPEG, strip metadata, or reduce dimensions only after checking the platform’s recommended ratio. For a transparent graphic, compare a lossless WebP export, but retain a tested PNG fallback.
WebP works in a browser but not in a social card
Browser support does not establish crawler support. Verify the crawler’s response and MIME handling; if the platform fails, switch that destination to PNG or JPEG.

A logo has a visible box around it
The file was exported as JPEG or with a flattened background. Re-export with an alpha channel as PNG (or tested WebP), then composite it over the final card background.

Cost, performance and reliability considerations
- Payload: smaller JPEG or WebP files generally fetch faster, but a crisp, readable PNG is preferable to a tiny card nobody can read.
- Rendering: wait for fonts, lazy images and client-side layout before capture; otherwise the screenshot can differ from the browser view used in testing.
- Caching: use stable URLs for immutable cards and versioned URLs for replacements. A screenshot cache or social crawler cache can outlive your deployment.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I put both PNG and JPEG in one og:image tag?
Use one canonical URL per image declaration. If you need a fallback, publish separate metadata variants only when the consuming platform’s behavior is known and tested; the Open Graph protocol does not guarantee a universal format-negotiation order.
Does PNG transparency appear in a social preview?
Only if the destination preserves alpha; many platforms place the image on their own background or flatten it. Test the rendered card, and provide a designed background when transparency is not dependable.
