For U.S.-origin holiday trips in 2026, there is no single best booking date—but current fare snapshots are elevated, and the available evidence suggests you should compare options now rather than wait for a guaranteed price drop. Hopper’s 2026 snapshot puts average domestic round-trip airfare at $402 for Thanksgiving, up 31% ($95) year over year, and $452 for Christmas, up 23% ($85). Those are broad, search-based averages, not quotes for your route; the right time to book depends on the itinerary, schedule, and terms that work for you.
Should you book holiday travel now or wait?
Start researching and comparing now, then book when a fare and itinerary meet your needs. For Thanksgiving, two providers point to a similar broad window, but neither offers a route-specific guarantee:
- KAYAK, September 29, 2026: Its analysis says domestic fares have historically been lowest about five weeks before Thanksgiving—around the week of October 19 in 2026—and warns that waiting until the final two weeks can become expensive. KAYAK’s comparisons draw on U.S.-origin searches, including searches from April 1 to September 1, 2026 for its main holiday comparison and August 1 to September 27 for airfare trend charts. - Hopper, September 25, 2026: Its index recommends monitoring fares and booking before Halloween. Hopper’s holiday airfare averages use a demand-weighted average of the 10th percentile of prices available during the searches in its recent one-week report window. These are search-based observations, not promises that waiting until a particular week will lower the price of your flight. If you find a schedule that suits you at a fare you can accept, delaying for a theoretically better date risks losing that option. Travel + Leisure quoted KAYAK travel trends expert Kayla DeLoache advising travelers, “Don’t try to time it perfectly,” and recommending booking when a convenient itinerary is available at a reasonable price. Google’s often-cited timing figures are historical, not a 2026 forecast. Its September 9, 2025 analysis used round-trip fares observed from January 1, 2021 through August 1, 2025 across the top 4,000 U.S. origin markets; it found average lowest prices 35 days before Thanksgiving and 51 days before Christmas. What do current 2026 holiday fares look like?
Hopper’s current snapshot provides a rough reference point, not a prediction for an individual itinerary. Its domestic hotel figures are nightly averages; airfare figures are domestic round-trip averages.

The fare averages reflect Hopper’s demand-weighted method using the 10th percentile of prices available during its searches, not a typical price guaranteed to be available on every route. Compare the exact fare and lodging cost for your dates, including any fees you expect to pay. ABC News repeated Hopper’s airfare figures, so that report is not independent confirmation of them.

Can changing your travel dates lower the fare?
Often, comparing nearby dates is worthwhile, but the size of a possible difference depends on the provider’s comparison and your route. KAYAK and Hopper publish different date examples; treat them as separate snapshots, not interchangeable forecasts.

Moving a departure or return by a day can also mean taking time off work, arriving during the holiday, or changing where you stay. Check whether the cheaper calendar option still fits your plans, rather than comparing fares in isolation. KAYAK says selected two-one-way “Hacker Fare” combinations in its sample could save up to 29% domestically or 30% internationally. Those are maximums on selected routes, not expected savings; compare the separate tickets’ conditions and the full itinerary before choosing one.

How to compare holiday itineraries beyond the headline price
For the options you would genuinely consider, compare the details that affect the whole trip:
- Total trip cost: Add the airfare, lodging for the exact dates, and fees you will pay.
- Schedule: Check departure and arrival times, return timing, and whether you can travel on the holiday or shift dates.
- Connections: A connecting itinerary may cost less, but adds another leg to your journey; weigh that trade-off against a nonstop option.
- Change and refund terms: Read the actual fare rules and any paid flexibility product terms before buying.
- Arrival buffer: If you must attend a fixed gathering, consider whether arriving a day early is worth more than the savings from arriving closer to the event.
AAA – The Auto Club Group’s September 28, 2026 release quotes spokesperson Tiffany Wright saying, “Travelers don’t need to book the first itinerary they find, but this is a good time to start researching options, comparing prices and making decisions before choices become more limited.” The same release reported that 51% of surveyed North Carolina residents who delayed booking said they later paid more. That was a self-reported result from 400 North Carolina residents—not a national estimate or proof that delay caused the higher payment. How can you reduce disruption risk?
When a holiday event has a fixed start time, an itinerary with a buffer or fewer connections may be a better fit than the cheapest option. Hopper recommends considering early departures, direct flights, and arriving a day before a fixed event when possible. It reports that departures after 9 a.m. are twice as likely to be delayed as departures from 5–8 a.m.; this is a general Hopper statistic, not a prediction about a specific flight.
Hopper also discusses flexible cancellation or change options and its own Disruption Assistance. These are provider-specific products, not interchangeable with travel insurance. Before paying for any add-on, read its current terms: what events are covered, what assistance or reimbursement is offered, exclusions, and how to request help. The product name alone does not establish what protection you will receive.
