For U.S. holiday flights, Google’s analysis of five years of Google Flights data puts the average Thanksgiving fare low 34 days before departure and the average Christmas fare low 56 days before departure. Those are broad historical averages—not a forecast for your route. Google’s reported low-price ranges span 21–57 days for Thanksgiving and 33–67 days for Christmas, so check the fare for your actual dates rather than treating one day as a deadline.
Google’s holiday booking windows for 2026
Google’s October 5, 2026 guidance is based on five years of aggregated Google Flights data and measures the booking interval relative to U.S. departures. It reports an average low and a wider range of days before departure when fares were low:
| Trip | Average fare low | Reported low-price range |
|---|---|---|
| Thanksgiving | 34 days before departure | 21–57 days before departure |
| Christmas | 56 days before departure | 33–67 days before departure |
Google says the Christmas average low was five days earlier than in its prior-year analysis. The range matters as much as the average: it shows that low fares did not cluster on one precise day. Neither figure guarantees when any particular flight will be cheapest.

What the wider flight data adds
Domestic and international flights
Across domestic flights overall, Google reports the average fare low at 39 days before departure, within a 22–57-day low-price range. For international flights, the average low was 89 days out, within a 50–133-day range. Google says the average price drop across that international range was insignificant and recommends booking as soon as possible; the 89-day mark is not a reason to wait if you find a suitable fare.
Booking weekday is a small lever
Wednesday was the cheapest day to book in Google’s analysis, but it was only about 1.4% cheaper than Sunday, the most expensive booking day. That modest spread makes the day you click “buy” a weaker savings lever than changing when you fly.

Changing travel days can make a larger difference
Google reports that departing Monday and returning Tuesday or Wednesday saved about 14% versus weekend flights. For domestic trips, those weekday itineraries saved up to 20% versus leaving and returning Sunday. These are averages from Google’s analysis, not guaranteed savings; shifting dates can mean less convenient travel or different time away.

Google found nonstop tickets were 20% more expensive on average than tickets with a connection. A connection may lower the fare, but weigh the savings against added travel time and the inconvenience or itinerary risk of a stop.

How to decide whether to book your holiday flight now
If your dates and destination are fixed
Use the seasonal windows as context, not a countdown. Google’s current guidance is to book early when dates are fixed, since waiting for a generalized average to arrive could mean losing a suitable itinerary. For the exact destination and dates, Google Flights or AI Mode can compare the current price with prior years and indicate whether the fare is likely to rise or fall. Treat that indication as guidance, not a promise that the price will change in a particular direction.
If you have flexibility
Compare nearby departure and return dates, especially weekday options against weekend travel. Then compare nonstop and connecting itineraries on the same dates. The reported differences for flying days and nonstop service were larger than the 1.4% booking-weekday spread, but the best choice depends on whether the lower fare is worth less convenient timing or a longer trip.

A practical comparison checklist
- Search the exact dates and route you would actually take; historical holiday averages cannot identify the cheapest fare for an individual itinerary.
- Compare alternate weekdays if your schedule allows, noting the departure and return days rather than only the booking day.
- Check the nonstop fare against a connecting option and decide whether the price difference justifies the added time.
- Consider whether the current fare and itinerary work for you, instead of waiting solely to match Google’s average low day.
Why older holiday booking rules can differ
Google’s 2022 five-year analysis put domestic Thanksgiving fares lowest 52 days before departure, with a 36–74-day range, and Christmas fares lowest 22 days out, with a 20–88-day range. The different results in the 2026 guidance are a reminder that historical booking windows shift over time; an older “best day to book” rule should not be treated as timeless.
The 2025 analysis used a separately documented sample: average round-trip fares observed from January 1, 2021 through August 1, 2025, for 4- to 16-day trips departing from the top 4,000 U.S. markets. For Thanksgiving and Christmas, it included trips departing before the holiday and returning afterward. Those methodological details belong to the 2025 analysis and should not be assumed to describe the 2026 update.
