For U.S. holiday departures, Google’s 2026 analysis puts the average fare low at 34 days before Thanksgiving and 56 days before Christmas. Those are historical averages, not guaranteed best-buy dates for a particular route: Google’s low-fare ranges are broad—21–57 days before Thanksgiving and 33–67 days before Christmas. If your dates are fixed, Google’s advice is to book early rather than wait for those averages to arrive.
Google’s 2026 holiday booking windows
Google published these estimates on Oct. 5, 2026, using five years of aggregated Google Flights data. The article does not detail how the 2026 holiday samples were constructed, so treat the numbers as national guideposts for U.S. departures, not route-specific forecasts.
| Trip | Average lowest-fare timing | Google’s lower-fare range |
|---|---|---|
| Thanksgiving | 34 days before departure | 21–57 days before departure |
| Christmas | 56 days before departure | 33–67 days before departure |
Google says Thanksgiving’s lower-price options tend to appear in October. For Christmas, it places the lower-fare window from late October to mid-November; its 2026 estimated low point is five days earlier than in its prior-year analysis. Neither statement means every route will follow that pattern.

The 34- and 56-day figures are averages across past fare patterns. Google does not say that a specific flight will be cheapest exactly on either day, and it warns that future prices may differ from historical trends. The estimates have also shifted across annual analyses. Google’s 2022 post put the average Thanksgiving low at 52 days out and Christmas at 22 days out, so those older figures should not replace its 2026 guidance. The earlier post described its sample as average round-trip fares observed from Aug. 1, 2017, to Aug. 1, 2022, for trips lasting 6–9 or 13–16 days from the top 4,000 U.S. markets. Google has not established that the current holiday estimates use the same sample design.
What to do if your dates are set
For a fixed itinerary, Google’s current recommendation is to book as early as possible. James Byers, Google’s Group Product Manager for Search, wrote: “Our best recommendation is to book your holiday flights ASAP.” The average windows can help you understand historical tendencies, but waiting until a target day risks losing the fare, schedule, or seats you want.

For your specific origin, destination, and dates, search the itinerary in Google Flights or Google Search’s AI Mode and inspect the “cheapest time to book” insight when it appears. Compare that signal with the fare available now and your need for a particular schedule. Google describes its insights as based on past trends, not a promise that a fare will fall.
How to compare fares in Google Flights
- Search your exact trip. Enter the origin, destination, dates, and travelers in Google Flights.
- Check timing and flexibility. Review any “cheapest time to book” insight, then use the Dates, Price graph, or Airports tools to compare alternate days, weeks, months, or nearby airports if your plans permit.
- Track a fare if you are still deciding. Turn on price tracking for the itinerary to receive alerts when prices change; an alert is information, not a guarantee that a lower fare will appear.
- Compare Best with Cheapest. Best balances price, convenience, and ease of booking. Cheapest prioritizes price and may surface additional online travel agency offers, self-transfers, or itineraries involving different airports.
- Inspect the whole itinerary and booking terms. Compare the total price, stops and layover lengths, any self-transfer or airport change, provider, and convenience before choosing. Google says it compares offers from more than 300 travel partners, but its results may not include every available offer.

Which changes may matter more than booking weekday
In Google’s 2026 analysis, booking on Wednesday was about 1.4% cheaper than booking on Sunday—a difference Google describes as negligible. If you can change the trip itself, travel-day flexibility showed a larger reported average difference: departing Monday and returning Tuesday or Wednesday saved about 14% compared with weekend flights. For domestic trips, flying out and returning Sunday could cost up to 20% more. These are aggregate comparisons, not promised savings for an individual itinerary.
Google also found nonstop tickets were 20% more expensive on average than tickets with connections. A connection can reduce the fare but add travel time and complexity; the cheapest itineraries may involve self-transfers or changing airports. Compare the trade-off against your holiday schedule and tolerance for disruption.

Seasonal searches are not fare recommendations
Google reported the largest relative increases in searches versus 2025 for Thanksgiving domestic travel to Hilo, Buffalo, Columbus, Punta Gorda, and Greenville. For Christmas and New Year’s Eve international searches, the destinations were Athens, Québec City, Rio de Janeiro, Hanoi, and Guatemala City. Those are changes in search interest, not evidence that the destinations have the lowest fares.
