I stopped tracking my sleep because watching the numbers was affecting my mental health. Fitbit Air made me reconsider—not because a wearable can fix anxiety or tell me exactly how well I slept, but because it offers a different way to collect sleep information. Whether that trade-off makes sense depends on how the data affects you.
Why I stepped away from sleep tracking
I had reached a point where sleep data felt less like useful context and more like a judgment. Instead of treating a score or estimate as one imperfect signal, I found myself giving it too much authority over how I felt about the night. Taking a break was a way to protect my peace of mind, not a claim that sleep tracking is harmful for everyone.
That reaction is not unique, though it is not inevitable. Researchers use the term “orthosomnia” for anxiety or preoccupation linked to pursuing idealized sleep metrics. A 2024 cross-sectional study estimated its prevalence in a general-population sample at 3.0% under conservative criteria, 8.6% under moderate criteria, and 14.0% under lenient criteria. Those figures vary with the definition used, and the study cannot show that trackers caused the concerns. The study explains its criteria and estimates.

Consumer devices infer sleep stages and wakefulness rather than measuring them directly, so a precise-looking chart is not the same as a definitive account of your night. The Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine discussion of orthosomnia provides context, not a measure of how commonly this happens.

What made Fitbit Air worth reconsidering
Google announced Fitbit Air on May 7, 2026, as a screenless wearable that tracks sleep duration and stages alongside other health metrics. Google also describes sleep insights, a sleep score, and Smart Wake, which uses an alarm setting and movement and heart-rate signals within a wake window. Google’s announcement and the Google Store product page describe the features; they are product information, not proof of clinical effectiveness.
The screenless design is what made me pause. It changes how the device presents itself, but it does not change what sleep tracking is: a stream of estimates that may be useful if I can keep them in perspective. I’m willing to reconsider the data, not to hand it the power to decide whether I slept well.

Google says the tracker can last up to a week on a charge. Some features require a Google Health Premium subscription, availability varies by country, and certain advanced features are not available everywhere. Check Google’s Fitbit Air Help Center for current compatibility and access details. A WIRED reviewer described the sleep tracking as solid and reported Google’s claim that an updated model improved by 15%; that is a vendor-reported figure, not independent proof of 15% greater real-world accuracy for every user. WIRED’s review gives the reviewer’s account.

What a sleep score can—and cannot—tell me
A score can make patterns easier to notice, but it compresses a complicated night into a number. Sleep-stage estimates are not a clinical verdict, and a low score does not establish that something is wrong. If the number leaves me more worried than informed, its usefulness is limited regardless of how polished the app or hardware feels.

Google states that “Sleep tracking features are not intended to diagnose or treat any medical conditions and should not be relied on for medical purposes.” That limitation matters: Fitbit Air’s listed features do not establish that it can diagnose a sleep disorder, treat one, or prevent tracker-related anxiety. For a persistent sleep or health concern, a wearable score is not a substitute for professional advice.
Evidence about people’s experiences is mixed rather than one-sided. A 2025 Canadian national survey examined sleep-wearable use, perceived effects on sleep and stress, and anxiety. As an observational survey, it can describe reported experiences but cannot establish that a wearable caused anxiety or improved sleep. The survey’s findings are a reminder that the same kind of data can feel helpful to one person and stressful to another.

How I decide whether to keep tracking
I’m treating the decision as a personal check-in, not a test of willpower. The question is whether the information changes a useful choice—or whether it pulls my attention toward scoring and second-guessing sleep.

- Notice the effect. After checking the data, do I feel curious and equipped to make a practical adjustment, or tense and preoccupied?
- Keep estimates in perspective. A sleep-stage chart is an estimate, not a definitive record of what happened in my body.
- Consider the whole experience. Comfort overnight, screen and notification design, and which insights are available without a paid subscription may matter as much as the score.
- Take a break if tracking raises anxiety. World Sleep Society recommendations say people whose tracking contributes to sleep anxiety may consider a break or discontinuing it. That is an option for affected individuals, not a universal prescription. Read the recommendations.
For me, reconsidering Fitbit Air means approaching sleep data with boundaries. I can try information that feels less intrusive, while staying ready to stop if checking it starts to cost more calm than it gives back.
