Keep screenshots in ordinary Git when they are small, change infrequently, and need to stay in step with the source code. Use Git LFS when large binaries still need project versioning, and use separate hosting or object storage when assets are numerous, frequently regenerated, independently delivered, or unnecessary for every clone and build. No universal file-size cutoff makes that choice for every project: weigh repository growth and checkout needs against hosting, traffic, and maintenance costs.

What does each storage choice mean?

  • Ordinary Git: The image itself is committed to the repository history. Contributors checking out the project get the asset alongside the code.
  • Git LFS: Git tracks a small pointer file, while the actual image is stored separately and retrieved through the LFS workflow. This keeps the asset associated with the project without putting each full binary into ordinary Git history.
  • External hosting or object storage: The image is kept outside the source repository and delivered from a separate service. The repository can retain a manifest, checksum, or versioned URL when a particular image version must be reproducible.

When should screenshots live in ordinary Git?

Use regular Git when the screenshots are part of the project rather than merely files the project happens to deliver. That commonly includes a small set of documentation images, UI assets used by the application, and visual-regression fixtures whose exact contents matter to a test. Version coupling is the main benefit: a checkout at a particular code revision can include the matching image.

Optimize images to sensible dimensions and formats, and remove redundant generated captures. Deleting an image in a later commit does not remove its earlier copy from repository history, so repeated replacement of large images can keep adding weight even when the current working tree looks lean.

GitHub’s file limits are useful guardrails only for GitHub-hosted repositories: it warns when a file exceeds 50 MiB and blocks files above 100 MiB. GitHub says repositories should ideally remain below 1 GB and strongly recommends staying below 5 GB; it also notes that repository health depends on factors such as size, commit frequency, contents, and structure. These are vendor recommendations, not universal Git thresholds or a guarantee of performance for a given project. GitHub’s large-file guidance

When does Git LFS fit?

Choose Git LFS when contributors need a large screenshot or other binary to be versioned with the project, but storing complete binary versions in ordinary Git history is undesirable. The Git tree contains a pointer; Git LFS stores and retrieves the file contents separately. This preserves a project-oriented workflow, but it does not make storage or transfer unlimited.

Before adopting it, verify the host’s per-object limit, storage and bandwidth quotas, billing, and whether clones, archives, and CI jobs fetch LFS objects as expected. On GitHub, documented maximum individual LFS object sizes are 2 GB for Free and Pro, 4 GB for Team, and 5 GB for Enterprise Cloud; objects over 5 GB are rejected. Each pushed new version of an LFS file is a whole file and counts toward storage use. These are GitHub plan limits, not general LFS limits. GitHub’s Git LFS documentation

One important exception for GitHub-hosted publishing: Git LFS cannot be used with GitHub Pages sites, so it is not a way to keep large page assets in LFS and serve them through Pages. GitHub’s Git LFS documentation

When should screenshots be hosted elsewhere?

Use separate hosting when screenshots are principally delivery assets: for example, generated at scale, updated independently from code, served to a large audience, or not needed by every developer and build. GitHub recommends keeping programmatically generated files outside Git, such as in object storage. GitHub’s repository limits guidance

External storage is also worth considering when a static site’s repository or delivery quotas become a constraint. For GitHub Pages, GitHub lists a 1 GB recommended source-repository size, a 1 GB maximum published-site size, and a soft bandwidth limit of 100 GB per month. These are Pages-specific limits, not general rules for all hosts. GitHub may suggest a CDN, releases, or a more suitable host when quotas are exceeded. GitHub Pages limits

Object storage can serve static assets separately from a site deployment. Cloudflare documents a pattern using R2 with Pages, particularly for sites facing Pages file-count or file-size limits; its documentation describes R2 as S3-compatible and says it has no egress fees. Those are Cloudflare product statements, so check current service terms and costs before choosing it. Cloudflare’s Pages and R2 guide and How R2 works

How to choose for your project

  1. Ask whether an image belongs to a code revision. If a contributor or test needs the exact screenshot that matched a particular source revision, prefer ordinary Git for modest files or Git LFS for large ones.
  2. Estimate the repository cost over time. Consider total image volume, how often binaries change, and whether all contributors and CI jobs need to fetch them. A large set of frequently regenerated screenshots can impose ongoing clone and maintenance costs even if each file is manageable.
  3. Check the delivery path. If only a deployed site needs the images, assess the site host’s size, file-count, and traffic quotas and whether a CDN or object store is a better fit.
  4. Account for external dependencies. For hosted assets, plan stable URLs, availability, access permissions, backups and retention, caching, and how to reproduce a historical release if an image changes.
  5. Keep a reproducible reference when needed. Store a manifest, checksum, or versioned URL in the source repository when builds or historical pages must resolve to a specific external asset. Do not put private screenshots in a public repository or public bucket.

Quick decision guide

Situation Best starting point Why
A few modest documentation screenshots that change rarely Ordinary Git They remain available with the source revision and are not likely to dominate repository history.
Large binary screenshots that must be versioned with the project Git LFS The Git tree tracks pointers while the file contents are stored separately; confirm quotas and workflow support.
Many generated images, or assets that only the deployed site needs External hosting or object storage Contributors and builds need not carry every delivery asset in the source repository.
GitHub Pages site assets that exceed Pages constraints External static-asset storage Pages has its own site and traffic limits, and Git LFS is not supported for Pages sites.

There is no universal size threshold

A single image size or monthly traffic figure cannot decide this for every project. GitHub’s 50 MiB warning and 100 MiB block apply to individual files on GitHub, while its repository-size recommendations concern GitHub-hosted repositories; neither establishes a general cutoff for Git, LFS, or external storage. Choose based on observed repository impact, version-coupling needs, delivery requirements, and the real cost and operational burden of the available hosting options.
