NXP resumed initial operations at its two Austin wafer fabs on March 11, 2021, after the February winter storm forced them offline; the company estimated that about a month of wafer production had been lost. Infineon’s Austin Fab25 was ramping manufacturing after its infrastructure recovered within a week of the shutdown, according to trade reporting. Neither milestone meant an instant return to full output: restarting required equipment checks, repairs and quality verification.
When did the Austin fabs restart?
The storm disrupted electricity, natural gas and water across Texas beginning February 15, 2021. NXP shut both of its Austin wafer fabs, and Infineon’s Austin operation was also forced offline.
| Date or period | NXP | Infineon |
|---|---|---|
| February 15, 2021 | Both Austin wafer fabs shut after the storm disrupted utilities. | Austin operation forced offline; Infineon’s annual report confirms a storm-related power outage at Fab25. |
| Within one week of the shutdown | Not stated by NXP in its dated recovery updates. | EE Times reported that Fab25 infrastructure had recovered and manufacturing was ramping. |
| February 27, 2021 | NXP said utilities were restored and clean-room environments were safe for personnel to return. | No comparable dated milestone stated in the cited reporting. |
| March 11, 2021 | NXP announced that initial operations had resumed, alongside ongoing recovery work. | No comparable dated milestone stated in the cited reporting. |
NXP president and CEO Kurt Sievers said the company was making progress toward returning the fabs to pre-storm production levels. The wording matters: “initial operations” and a ramp are not the same as full pre-storm output.
Why did restarting take longer than restoring power?
A semiconductor fab cannot safely resume production just because electricity is available. Utility systems and safety conditions have to be verified, clean rooms made safe, equipment repaired or recalibrated, and work already in process checked for quality. NXP said each factory had to test just under 1,000 pieces of equipment.
#1 Best Overall
On March 11, NXP described its work as repairing storm damage, assessing systems, recalibrating equipment and checking wafers already in process. Those checks protect both personnel and the quality of complex manufacturing processes; restarting too quickly could put equipment and partially completed wafers at risk.
How much production and revenue were affected?
NXP estimated that the shutdown cost approximately one month of wafer production across its two Austin fabs. Its March 11 update retained its first-quarter 2021 revenue guidance but anticipated an approximately $100 million impact to second-quarter 2021 revenue. That was the company’s forward-looking estimate at the time, not a reported final loss.
NXP operated two Austin wafer fabs and employed approximately 4,000 people in the Austin community. The available evidence does not establish a comparable Infineon production-loss or revenue figure, so NXP’s estimates should not be applied to Fab25.
What is known about each company’s recovery?
NXP: dated updates and production estimate
NXP provided milestones from utility restoration and safe clean-room access through the March 11 restart of initial operations. It also disclosed the estimated month of lost wafer production and expected second-quarter revenue impact. The company said it was continuing to ramp production while maintaining quality.
Infineon: earlier infrastructure recovery, less quantified detail
EE Times reported that Infineon’s Austin Fab25 infrastructure recovered within a week of the forced shutdown and that manufacturing was ramping. Infineon’s annual report confirms the storm-related power outage, but the available material does not provide a matching company-issued restart chronology or quantified production and revenue impact.
