Earth had formed solid crust and liquid water by about 4.4 billion years ago, according to evidence preserved in ancient zircon crystals. That does not mark a single, planet-wide moment when a molten Earth suddenly became cool: it is an inference about conditions recorded by minerals, while impacts and volcanism could still disrupt or remelt parts of the surface.

What changed—and what the date means

Early Earth likely passed through a molten phase as the planet formed. As it cooled, material crystallized and differentiated, and a crust could form above the interior. Evidence from zircons indicates that crust and liquid water existed by roughly 4.4 billion years ago. It does not establish the exact date when all global or regional melting ended, or when Earth became uniformly stable.

The word “changed” can refer to different milestones: the first solid crust, the appearance of liquid water, the onset of long-term habitable conditions, or the waning of intense impacts. These milestones need not have happened at the same time.

How scientists infer early crust and water

Almost no intact rocks survive from Earth’s first geological eon, the Hadean. Instead, scientists study ancient zircon grains preserved in younger rocks. Their chemistry and isotopes retain clues about the rocks and environments in which the crystals formed.

NASA accounts describe titanium-based zircon thermometry and oxygen-isotope evidence consistent with relatively cool crust formation and interaction with liquid water. A NASA-hosted technical document interprets the zircon evidence as indicating continental crust and liquid-water oceans by 4.36–4.40 billion years ago. That range is an interpretation of mineral evidence—not a direct measurement of the temperature or state of the entire planet (NASA Earth Observatory; NASA-hosted technical document).

A zircon records conditions in its own source environment. It is powerful evidence that some crust and water-related processes existed early, but it cannot by itself prove that every part of Earth had cooled or that oceans covered the whole planet at once.

Was Earth really a global magma ocean?

Magma-ocean models help explain how a newly forming rocky planet could become hot, then crystallize, separate into layers, release volatiles, and cool. But “a magma ocean” should not be taken to mean that Earth remained a uniformly molten surface until one precise date. NASA Astrobiology describes a planet with intermittent volcanism as likely to have a relatively cool, solid crust much of the time, even if volcanic activity was far more intense than today (NASA Astrobiology).

A solid crust and violent geology can coexist. Major eruptions or impacts may have remelted or destabilized regions after crust formed. The available evidence supports a transition from an early molten phase to crusted conditions with possible episodes of disruption; it does not settle one universal end date for all melting.

When did Earth become habitable?

Liquid water and solid crust make environments that could be habitable, but they do not prove life existed then—or that conditions stayed habitable continuously. A 2018 review by Catling and colleagues frames the possible habitability boundary as a broad interval, from about 4.5 billion years ago if stable crust and a hydrosphere formed early, to about 3.9 billion years ago near the proposed end of intense bombardment (Catling and colleagues, 2018).

That range reflects uncertainty about what counts as the start of habitability and how stable surface conditions were. It is not a date for the origin of life, which the evidence described here does not determine.

Did asteroid impacts boil away the early oceans?

Impacts could heat the surface and disrupt local or regional environments, but the evidence does not support treating every impact as a global reset. One model analysis found no plausible scenario in which the habitable zone was fully sterilized after primary accretion and the proposed Moon-forming impact. This is a modeling conclusion, not proof that life existed or that impacts were harmless (model analysis).

The impact history is also difficult to reconstruct. Erosion and plate tectonics have erased much of Earth’s oldest record, and researchers debate whether there was a distinct Late Heavy Bombardment spike as often depicted. The precise intensity and chronology of early impacts remain unsettled (review of the impact record).

What the evidence cannot yet pin down

  • The exact date when a global magma ocean ended, or when the last regions of early Earth stopped melting.
  • Whether liquid water covered the entire planet at one time.
  • How continuously habitable surface environments were, or when life first originated.
  • The exact timing and severity of bombardment, including whether a distinct late impact spike occurred.

The strongest conclusion is narrower: surviving zircon evidence indicates that crust and liquid water existed by about 4.4 billion years ago, while Earth’s surface could still undergo later, episodic disruption.
