You can opt out of the AI toothbrush era now. Current evidence does not establish that AI toothbrushes are necessary for effective oral hygiene or that they outperform non-AI brushes. The useful question is whether a timer, pressure warning, or coverage feedback would help you brush more consistently—and whether that help is worth the added cost, app dependence, data collection, and complexity.

What makes a toothbrush “AI” — and what doesn’t?

A powered brush is not automatically an AI toothbrush. A timer or pressure sensor can provide straightforward feedback without making claims about machine learning. AI and connected models add software that interprets brushing patterns, maps coverage, or guides the user through an app or other interface. Those features may be useful, but the label alone does not show that a brush improves dental outcomes.

The distinction matters because evidence about powered toothbrushes is not evidence that AI coaching adds a further benefit. Dr. Stephen Meraw, president of the American Academy of Periodontology, told Ars Technica in 2024: “There isn’t enough research to conclusively say that AI toothbrushes do a better job than non-AI toothbrushes, but maintaining a healthy at-home oral hygiene regimen is essential to periodontal health.”

Dr. Ruchi Sahota, an ADA consumer advisor spokesperson, made the practical point in the same report: “When it comes to manual versus powered brushes, some of which may include artificial intelligence features, what truly matters and will make a difference in your oral and overall health is that you’re effectively brushing twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste.” This is general guidance, not a substitute for advice from your dentist about your individual needs.

What do the new AI toothbrushes actually offer?

The 2026 launches show that “AI toothbrush” describes different approaches, not one standard feature set. Their advertised capabilities are manufacturer claims; a launch announcement or specification does not independently demonstrate superior dental results.

Philips Sonicare 9900 Prestige: coverage guidance and pressure response

Philips announced its Next-Generation DiamondClean 9900 Prestige on July 7, 2026. The company says its third-generation AI model runs on the device and uses a 12-segment “Sonicare Mouth Map” to provide real-time coverage guidance through a light ring. Philips also describes automatic intensity adjustment when the user presses too hard, along with eight modes and three intensities. These are product specifications and feature claims, not independent evidence that the brush produces better outcomes than a non-AI brush. Philips said selected retailers in Europe and the U.S. would begin offering it in fall 2026, with additional countries later in 2026 and into 2027; check local availability rather than treating that forecast as a guarantee. Dyson CameraJet: camera-guided brushing and a rinse jet

Dyson announced CameraJet on September 1, 2026. The company says a camera and machine-learning system identifies gaps between teeth and triggers a targeted mouthrinse jet. Dyson lists a 100,000-pixel camera capturing 28 live images per second, and says its system involved 16 million lines of code and was trained on 470,000 dental images. Those are Dyson-reported specifications and development figures, not independent tests of dental benefit. The U.S. product page showed CameraJet as out of stock when accessed October 7, 2026. Connected brushing predates the 2026 launches

AI toothbrushes did not begin in 2026. In January 2018, Colgate-Palmolive announced its Smart Electronic Toothbrush E1, describing sensors and algorithms for tracking 16 mouth zones, Bluetooth, and an app. Its announced U.S. recommended retail price was $99.95 at the time; that historical announcement does not establish current availability. Which kind of brush fits your needs?

Brush type When feedback may help What the evidence establishes here Trade-offs to check
Manual You do not need electronic prompts and can maintain a consistent routine. The cited expert guidance emphasizes effective brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste; it does not establish that everyone needs a powered brush. There is no app or charging requirement, but a manual brush will not provide electronic timing, pressure, or coverage feedback.
Conventional powered You want powered brushing or simple features such as a timer or pressure sensing. Evidence about powered brushes should not be treated as proof of an added AI benefit. The cited expert commentary says AI-specific superiority is not established. Consider replacement-head cost and whether the features you want work without an app.
Connected or AI-enabled You find mapped coverage, prompts, or app-based tracking motivating or useful. Product makers describe these capabilities, but the available expert commentary does not establish that AI toothbrushes outperform non-AI alternatives. Check price, replacement heads, privacy terms, app requirements, charging, repair options, and how long connected support is likely to last.

For someone who wants basic feedback without making AI the deciding factor, Oral-B describes iO models with pressure sensing and a two-minute timer; higher-tier models add app-connected tracking and coverage guidance. That is a product option, not evidence of AI-specific superiority. Oral-B also reports a global in-market evaluation covering more than 16 million brushing sessions and 94.4% average coverage with position detection. Those are company-reported figures on an undated page accessed in 2026, not a directly reviewed independent comparison proving better outcomes than non-AI alternatives. App and data dependence

Connected-brush data practices vary by brand. Ars Technica’s 2024 report describes brushing-related information collected through toothbrush apps and sensors, including patterns and oral-care details, and notes that company policies may allow uses such as product recommendations or sharing. Do not assume that every brush collects the same data—or that all brushes upload images. Before buying, read the current privacy notice and check which useful functions require an app or account.

Support and product lifetime

A brush may still work as a toothbrush if its app or connected service changes, but connected features can depend on ongoing software support. Ars Technica’s report raises long-term support as a consideration for connected devices. Check what the brush can do without a phone, whether account access is required, and whether the manufacturer explains how long it expects to support the app and services.

Cost, upkeep, and complexity

The available product information does not provide a verified, like-for-like current price comparison for the 2026 launches. Before choosing, compare the actual local price and replacement-head cost, then consider charging, refill supplies where relevant, app setup, and repair options. A feature is only worth paying for if it helps you follow a routine you can sustain.

How to decide whether to buy one

  1. Identify the problem you want to solve. If you mainly forget how long to brush, a timer may be enough. If you press too hard, look for pressure feedback. If you regularly miss areas and visual prompts help you, coverage guidance may be useful.
  2. Separate the feature from the AI label. Decide whether you need a timer, pressure sensor, coverage map, camera, or app coaching. A simpler powered brush may offer the one feature you want without the rest.
  3. Check the evidence behind the outcome claim. Treat manufacturer descriptions as claims about their products, not independent proof that AI produces better dental results.
  4. Review ownership requirements. Check replacement-head prices, app requirements, privacy terms, charging, repair options, and support expectations before paying extra for connected features.
  5. Choose the least complicated option that supports your routine. If prompts make you brush more effectively and consistently, they may be worthwhile for you. If not, there is no evidence here that you need AI to maintain an effective routine.
