A parse-and-save cycle does not automatically preserve the text a user supplied. It may preserve the meaning the application understands while changing formatting or discarding details its data model cannot represent. Before promising a lossless round trip, decide what must survive each persistence boundary: meaning, exact text, or exact bytes.
Three different promises sit behind “preserve my project”
Importing, editing, and saving raise separate questions. Treating them as one guarantee is how products end up promising more fidelity than their storage and serializers can deliver.
- Can the application understand the input? Parsing may establish that a document is usable as a project, but it does not prove that every detail has been retained.
- Which fields can the application edit? A typed model represents the fields its schema knows about. Information outside that model may not survive if the application rebuilds output from the model alone.
- What original representation must survive where the application makes no change? This is a separate preservation decision. The answer may concern meaning, characters, or bytes, depending on the product’s contract.
For example, the JSON number 9007199254740993 exceeds JavaScript’s exact integer range. If an ordinary JavaScript number parser rounds it, serializing that in-memory number cannot restore the original digits. Even when the value remains meaningful, a serializer can change whitespace or key order, or omit fields the model does not know. Whether those changes are acceptable depends on what the product promises.

Choose the fidelity contract before choosing the storage strategy
| Contract | What it promises | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Semantic preservation | Supported meaning remains unchanged. | Formatting and other lexical details may change during serialization. |
| Text preservation | The promised text surface—such as characters, ordering, and user-authored formatting—survives. | Regenerating output from a model may be insufficient if parsing discarded those details. |
| Byte preservation | The exact stored carrier survives. | This may matter for signatures, encoding, unknown fields, or unsupported extensions; it is a stronger promise than semantic equivalence. |
These contracts can coexist. An application can use a parsed model for editing while retaining original source as a carrier for information that must survive a particular round trip. On export, it must choose deliberately whether to regenerate from the model or forward preserved source material. A parse-and-serialize test using ordinary fixtures does not establish byte equality.

Keep preserved source tied to the boundary that accepted it
In its description of WorldScript Studio’s restore and import paths, the DEV Community article says admitted source is carried alongside the editable model. After identity and schema checks, that carrier can serve as the starting point for a later save, with application-owned fields overlaid. This is an account of the article’s described implementation, not an independent verification of the application.
The design principle is broader: preserve the richest representation a specific boundary needs, make transformations explicit, and bind preserved material to the authority and project lifetime for which it was accepted. A carrier does not replace input validation or the decision about who may admit it. Nor should a carrier from one project lifetime silently be reused after the project it belongs to has been replaced.

Persistence adapters can make different guarantees
A filesystem path can preserve and write original text. IndexedDB stores structured values at the relevant boundary described in the article. Since those adapters do not store the same representation, they cannot automatically offer identical byte-level behavior.
State the guarantee at the boundary it actually covers—for example, “the filesystem restore path preserves admitted text”—rather than claiming that every adapter preserves every project byte. If adapters differ, document where normalization can occur and which fields or representations each one retains.

Test the policy, not just whether a round trip succeeds
A test that parses input and produces valid JSON proves neither that unknown fields survived nor that large numeric lexemes or exact source formatting remained intact. Conversely, byte-for-byte equality is a poor assertion when the product intentionally removes machine-local metadata. Write assertions that match the chosen contract.
- Confirm that fields promised for preservation remain in the saved output.
- Confirm that application-owned edits appear and take precedence where intended.
- Confirm that prohibited or machine-local metadata is absent when its removal is part of the policy.
- Confirm that unsupported or invalid inputs fail closed rather than being accepted as trustworthy state.
- Use exact-output comparisons only where exact text or byte identity is promised; otherwise test semantic invariants and document allowed normalization.
Adversarial fixtures can expose losses that ordinary examples miss. Include large integers, duplicate or unknown fields, unusual whitespace, Unicode normalization cases, different line endings, and values the editor does not understand. For browser-backed state, also test failed writes such as transaction abortion and storage quota failure. These are test recommendations, not reported results from independent testing.

A practical review checklist
- Fidelity: Is the promise semantic, text-level, byte-level, or different at different boundaries?
- Representation: What does each adapter actually store and return?
- Ownership: Which fields can the application edit, and which must remain opaque?
- Admission: Which identity, authority, and project lifetime bind a preserved carrier to the data it represents?
- Failure policy: Which errors fail closed, and which normalizations are explicitly allowed?
- Evidence: Do tests assert the promised preservation, owned edits, intentional omissions, and failure behavior?
