No one app is the proven winner on every older phone. The published evidence does not support a claim that any of the three is faster, lighter on RAM or easier on the battery than the others. Two things decide the answer: which Android version your phone runs, and whether the maker still ships security updates for it. After that, the choice comes down to who you talk to, how private the chats need to be, and how much storage you have left.
Step one: check Android version support
Each app publishes a minimum Android version. These figures come from the vendors’ own pages and can change, so confirm them on the app’s Google Play listing for your exact phone.
| App | Published Android minimum | Where it is stated |
|---|---|---|
| Android 6.0 or above | WhatsApp’s Android download page. Its support page said Android 5 support would end on September 8, 2026, a date that has now passed. | |
| Signal | Android 6.0 | Signal’s troubleshooting support page |
| Telegram | Android 5.0 and up | Telegram’s FAQ, which itself warns that parts of the document may be outdated |
In practice, a phone stuck on Android 5 has one documented option, Telegram. Even there, check that the Play Store still offers the app to your device. On Android 6 or newer, all three are officially eligible.

An app minimum says only that the software will install and run. It says nothing about whether your phone still gets security patches. Signal says this directly: if a device’s operating system hasn’t received manufacturer security updates in a long time, Signal may no longer run on it. Look up your phone maker’s update policy for your model, as well as the app requirements. A phone that still runs the app but has gone years without patches is a risk whichever messenger you use.

What is actually documented for older hardware
Telegram: storage and animation controls
- Cache clearing. Telegram’s FAQ explains how to clear cached media without logging out. Media stored in the cloud can be downloaded again later, so clearing the cache frees space without destroying your history.
- Footprint claim. Telegram states that it needs less than 100 MB on a device. That is the company’s own statement, not an independent measurement, and it has not been compared against WhatsApp or Signal. Real usage grows with cached media.
- Power Saving Mode. A March 2023 announcement from the Telegram Team (“Power Saving Mode and More”) says users can switch off animations and visual effects. It also describes optimizations for lower-end Android devices. The company wrote: “For Android, we’ve manually tested more than 200 device types to see how well Telegram performs and created optimized default settings to ensure all users get the best experience.” This is Telegram describing its own testing. It is not a head-to-head benchmark.
Signal and WhatsApp
Signal’s 2020 blog post discusses storage management and image settings. The sources behind this article give no current figures on local storage use for either Signal or WhatsApp, and no cross-app benchmark exists in them. That is a gap in published evidence, not proof that these apps run poorly. The only way to know how any of them behaves on your handset is to install it and watch how it performs.
Privacy trade-offs to understand before you switch
Telegram has two chat types, and they behave differently. Cloud chats sync across your devices. Secret Chats are tied to one device, and Telegram’s FAQ names them as its end-to-end encrypted option. If you need end-to-end encryption on Telegram, check that the conversation is a Secret Chat. The app name alone does not tell you. Secret Chats staying on one device also matters when you move to a new phone, because they will not follow you.

Android 5
Telegram’s FAQ lists Android 5.0 and up. WhatsApp’s current download page says Android 6 or above, and Signal’s stated minimum is Android 6. Recheck the Play Store listing and your phone’s security-update status first. Without patches, the phone is a weak platform for private conversations.
Very little free storage
Try Telegram’s cache clearing, or the equivalent storage tools in whichever app you use. Don’t count on a fixed app size.

Laggy animations
If you use Telegram, turn on Power Saving Mode and reduce effects. Whether that makes it faster than the alternatives on your phone is untested.
Sensitive conversations across several devices
Decide whether you want the convenience of Telegram cloud chats or the device-bound protection of Secret Chats. You can’t have both in one conversation.

Phone below every app’s minimum
If no current app will install, an upgrade may be the only sound route. If you buy, look for an unlocked Android smartphone and check the specific model’s Android version and how long its maker promises security updates. No particular model has been tested or recommended here.
