Which motion photo formats does WhatsApp support?
WhatsApp’s September 29, 2025 feature roundup pairs Live Photos on iOS with Motion Photos on Android. The announcement says people can share these moments with friends across platforms, but it does not establish compatibility for every phone, operating-system version, or recipient app.

These are platform-specific formats, not competing WhatsApp products. WhatsApp describes both as adding sound and movement, but its announcement does not claim that their underlying formats or behavior are technically identical. How do I send a Motion Photo on WhatsApp?
- Open the WhatsApp chat where you want to send the image.
- Choose the camera to take a photo, or attach an existing photo or video.
- In the sharing or editing flow, use the Motion Photo control to turn motion on or off. Use the audio control if you want to mute it.
- Before sending, check the motion control if you edited the image: editing turns off motion.
- Send the image.
These are the general Android instructions in WhatsApp’s Help Center. The page does not list specific eligible phone models or minimum app versions, so the controls may not appear on every device or app build.

What will the recipient see and hear?
A Motion Photo contains a still image along with video and audio recorded around the moment of capture, according to WhatsApp’s Help Center. The sender can disable the motion component or mute the audio in the sharing flow. The announcement describes Live Photos and Motion Photos more broadly as adding sound and movement; it does not detail precisely how every recipient device or app presents them.
Does it work between iPhone and Android?
WhatsApp announced sharing Live Photos on iOS and Motion Photos on Android with friends across platforms. That supports cross-platform sharing as the feature’s intended use, but the cited announcement and Help Center do not specify universal recipient compatibility, a complete device list, or operating-system requirements.

Why might the motion option be missing?
- The device or app version may not expose the control. WhatsApp’s official pages do not name minimum versions or handset eligibility.
- The image may have been edited. WhatsApp says editing turns off motion; check the motion control before sending.
- You may be using a still image rather than a motion-capture photo. The documented toggle applies to Motion Photos, not every ordinary photo.
WhatsApp’s feature roundup is dated September 29, 2025. The official materials cited here do not give a staged rollout timetable, so they do not establish when every eligible user received access.
