To change the sound for WhatsApp calls on a Samsung Galaxy, open Settings > Apps > WhatsApp > Notifications > Notification Categories > Call Notifications > Sound and choose a tone. WhatsApp calls and message alerts use separate sound settings, so use the steps below that match the sound you want to change.
Change the WhatsApp call sound in Samsung settings
- Open Settings on your Galaxy phone.
- Tap Apps, then select WhatsApp.
- Tap Notifications, then Notification Categories.
- Choose Call Notifications.
- Tap Sound and select the tone you want.
This route is documented by Samsung Australia for Australian-variant Galaxy devices. Menu names and category availability may differ on other regional variants, software versions, or app configurations. If you do not see Notification Categories or Call Notifications, try WhatsApp’s in-app call setting below.
Change the ringtone in WhatsApp
For WhatsApp’s general call tone, open WhatsApp > Settings > Notifications. Under Calls, tap Ringtone, choose a tone, then save or apply it. WhatsApp documents this as its Android route for changing the call ringtone. WhatsApp Help Center
Set a tone for a particular contact or chat
Open the person’s or group’s chat, tap the name at the top, then open Notifications. Set the message or call tone you want there; these are separate controls. WhatsApp group calls use the default WhatsApp Calls ringtone, which cannot be customized.

Change WhatsApp message alert sounds
To change message alerts rather than call sounds, open WhatsApp > Settings > Notifications. Adjust the tone under Message notifications or Group notifications. For one chat, open it, tap the person’s or group’s name, then Notifications to configure that chat’s message tone.
Samsung also separates message alerts from the phone’s cellular ringtone. Its US guide gives the device-level notification-sound path as Settings > Sounds and vibration > Notification sound. Samsung US

Use a custom audio file
- In the My Files app, copy or move the audio file into Internal storage/Notifications. If there is no Notifications folder, create one.
- Return to the notification sound selector for the app or category and choose the file, if it appears in the available tones.
Samsung India documents this method for local notification audio and explains that app notification categories can have their own sound when enabled as an alert. The sound choices shown for WhatsApp’s call category can depend on the device configuration. Samsung India

If the sound does not change
- The category is missing: Use WhatsApp’s in-app ringtone setting. Samsung’s WhatsApp-specific guide is for Australian-variant devices, and category labels or availability can vary.
- The selected tone is not playing: Check that WhatsApp notifications are enabled and that the relevant call notification category has not been disabled or silenced. WhatsApp notes that device settings can override its own notification settings. WhatsApp Help Center
- Your custom file is not listed: Confirm it is stored in the internal-storage Notifications folder. Create the folder if it is absent, then reopen the sound selector.
- You meant ordinary phone calls: That is the cellular ringtone, not a WhatsApp tone. On Galaxy phones, open Settings > Sounds and vibration > Ringtone. Samsung says a custom ringtone must be a song file stored on the device; tracks from streaming services cannot be selected as ringtone files. Samsung US
