SAE 60 is a high-viscosity engine-oil grade listed in the SAE J300 table reproduced in Petro-Canada Lubricants’ 2021 handbook. But there is no universal list of engines that can use it: the engine manufacturer’s instructions determine whether SAE 60 is suitable, and the oil must also meet the required performance specification.

What does “thickest grade” mean?

SAE J300 classifies engine oils by viscosity—their resistance to flow—using rheological criteria. It does not certify every other property an engine oil needs. SAE International’s current listing identifies J300_202405 as revised May 9, 2024, and describes the standard’s scope as viscosity classification: SAE J300_202405.

The SAE 60 grade appears among the non-W grades in the SAE J300 table reproduced in Petro-Canada Lubricants’ Lubricants Handbook, which reproduces the April 2021 table. That supports calling SAE 60 a high-viscosity grade shown in that table. The publicly retrieved current SAE listing does not expose its full grade table, so it does not establish that SAE 60 is the highest grade in the latest revision.

How to read SAE 60 and multigrade labels

In a multigrade label such as 20W-60, the number before W indicates the winter-temperature class, while the number after W is the high-temperature grade. W grades and non-W grades use different test criteria in the SAE classification; the numbers are not a simple scale of universal suitability. SAE J300 sets the classification framework, while API explains its use in API Oil Categories.

A high second number—or a single SAE 60 label—does not mean the oil is appropriate for every engine, climate, or condition. The grade describes viscosity, not whether the oil satisfies an engine’s complete requirements.

Which engines can use SAE 60?

Only engines whose manufacturer specifies or explicitly permits SAE 60, with an oil that also meets the required service or performance category. API’s API 1509, 21st edition, Annex F, says SAE viscosity grades are a rheological classification intended to help engine manufacturers determine which grades to recommend. API also advises: “Vehicle owners should refer to their owner’s manuals before consulting these charts.”

There is no supported universal rule that SAE 60 is suitable for all older, racing, worn, or low-oil-pressure engines, or for engines operating in hot climates. Compatibility depends on the particular engine’s documentation; no model-specific manual establishing SAE 60 compatibility is cited here.

How to check whether your engine permits it

  1. Find the viscosity guidance. Check the owner’s manual or authoritative documentation for the exact engine. Look for its viscosity chart and any temperature or operating-condition limits.
  2. Confirm the oil specification. Check the required service or performance category as well as the viscosity grade. A matching SAE number alone is not enough; API’s motor-oil guidance distinguishes viscosity from oil-performance categories.
  3. Verify the exact grade is allowed. Use SAE 60 or a multigrade ending in 60 only if the documentation specifies or explicitly permits that grade for the expected operating conditions.
  4. When the manual is unclear, ask the manufacturer or an authorized service provider. Do not choose a thicker oil solely because an engine is old, runs hot, or has low oil pressure.

What to compare when choosing oil

For a particular vehicle or engine, compare only oils allowed by its documentation. Check the approved viscosity for expected operating temperatures, the required performance or service category, and whether the documentation permits the exact monograde or multigrade product. SAE grade alone cannot establish that a product is suitable.
