If you want a conventional tablet for ebooks, the iPad mini (A17 Pro) is a well-supported compact option: it combines an 8.3-inch display with broad app access and browsing. If your main goal is reading novels for long stretches, consider a dedicated E Ink reader such as the Kindle Paperwhite instead. These are different device categories, so a fair guide is more useful than forcing them into a five-tablet ranking.

Tablet or E Ink reader: which fits your reading?

A conventional LCD or OLED tablet is better suited to color publications, feature-rich PDFs, web pages, and switching between reading and other apps. An E Ink reader is designed more narrowly around text. It can be a better fit for focused, long-form reading and long intervals between charges.

  • Choose a tablet if you read comics, magazines, illustrated textbooks, or PDFs that benefit from color and responsive zooming, or if you want one device for reading, browsing, and other apps.
  • Choose an E Ink reader if novels and ordinary text are your priority and you value a focused reading experience, outdoor readability, and fewer charging stops.

Neither category is universally easier on the eyes; comfort depends on the display, brightness, lighting, and personal preference. Kobo’s comparison discusses the category tradeoffs and gives a useful weight example: it reports 241 g for an 8-inch Kobo Sage and 297 g for a comparable 8.2-inch iPad mini. Those figures are Kobo’s comparison, not a universal tablet-versus-reader weight rule. Kobo’s e-reader and tablet comparison

Which compact tablet is a strong choice for ebooks?

Apple iPad mini (A17 Pro)

The iPad mini is a practical choice if you want a small tablet that can run reading apps alongside browsers and other software. NBC Select’s October 2026 guide lists an 8.3-inch display, a weight of 0.65 lb, USB-C, and up to 10 hours of battery life. It also reports using the Kindle app for reading. These are guide-published specifications and reported experience, not results from our own testing. NBC Select’s 2026 tablet guide

#1 Best Overall
Amazon Kindle 16 GB (2024 model) - Light and compact, with fast page turns, and high contrast ratio - Matcha
  • Light and compact - With adjustable brightness, high contrast ratio, and fast page turns.
  • Effortless reading in any light - Read comfortably with a 6“ glare-free display, adjustable front light—now 25% brighter at max setting—and dark mode.
  • Escape into your books - Tune out messages, emails, and social media with a distraction-free reading experience.
  • Read for a while - Get up to 6 weeks of battery life on a single charge.
  • Take your library with you – 16 GB storage holds thousands of books.

The tradeoff is inherent to using a general-purpose tablet for reading: its app flexibility and color are valuable for mixed content, but its battery life should not be treated as equivalent to an E Ink reader’s manufacturer estimate. A case also adds weight, so consider the full setup if you expect to hold it for hours.

When is the Kindle Paperwhite a better alternative?

The Kindle Paperwhite is a dedicated e-reader, not a tablet. It belongs in this decision because it may better suit readers whose main activity is novels and other long-form text. Amazon’s October 2026 announcement says the current Paperwhite has adjustable warm light, is waterproof, and offers up to 12 weeks of battery life on a single charge. That is Amazon’s manufacturer estimate; actual battery life varies with use, and it is not directly comparable with the iPad mini’s separate “up to 10 hours” figure. What should you check before choosing a reading tablet?

Match the screen to the material

Color and a conventional tablet display can be useful for comics, magazines, web pages, and visually dense PDFs. For novels and standard text, an E Ink reader may provide the more focused experience. If PDFs are central to your use, check that the screen size and app tools suit the document; small screens can mean frequent zooming and panning.

Amazon Kindle Paperwhite 16GB (2024 model) – 7" glare-free display and weeks of battery life – Black
  • Our fastest Kindle Paperwhite ever – The next-generation 7“ Paperwhite display has a higher contrast ratio and 25% faster page turns.
  • Ready for travel – The ultra-thin design has a larger glare-free screen so pages stay sharp no matter where you are.
  • Escape into your books – Your Kindle doesn’t have social media, notifications, or other distracting apps.
  • Battery life for your longest novel – A single charge via USB-C lasts up to 12 weeks.
  • Read in any light – Adjust the display from white to amber to read in bright sunlight or in the dark.

Consider weight and how you hold it

For extended handheld sessions, weight and dimensions matter as much as headline screen size. Compare the exact device configuration and remember that a cover adds weight. A stand or supported reading position can make a heavier tablet more comfortable, but it changes how portable the setup feels.

Check app and file needs

Tablets offer broad app access, which can be useful if you move among ebook services, library apps, PDF tools, browsers, and annotation software. Before buying any device, confirm that the specific apps and file workflows you rely on are available for its operating system. A dedicated reader may be enough for books but less flexible for documents and browsing.

Read battery claims in context

“Up to” figures are manufacturer or publisher claims, not guarantees of typical use. Screen settings, wireless connectivity, reading habits, and other activity affect runtime. The cited iPad mini and Paperwhite figures come from different sources and are not based on a shared test, so they should not be used as a head-to-head battery benchmark.

What about Samsung Galaxy Tab models?

Samsung’s official comparison page is useful for checking weights and accessories across its Galaxy Tab family, but the available page information does not establish a particular model as a reading-first winner. Treat a Galaxy Tab as an Android tablet family to investigate rather than assuming every model has the same screen, weight, or reading suitability. Why this guide doesn’t rank five tablets

A trustworthy top-five list needs current, comparable details for at least five actual tablet models, including screen characteristics, weight, battery conditions, app compatibility, region, and price. The available information supports a compact tablet recommendation and a distinct E Ink alternative, but it does not provide consistent primary-source specifications for five tablet models. Naming extra winners would imply a comparison the evidence does not establish.

The broader distinction is supported by iTechGuides’ 2025 comparison: conventional tablets offer color and broader app flexibility, while E Ink devices are aimed at focused text reading. Its recommendations are specification-based rather than personal hands-on test results. iTechGuides’ 2025 reading-tablet comparison
