For many 19-inch CRT monitors, 1280 × 1024 at 85 Hz is a practical starting point—but only if the monitor’s manual lists that combination. Use the exact model’s supported resolution and refresh-rate table as the authority. Some models also support 1600 × 1200 at 75 Hz, but that higher resolution can make text smaller and may look less sharp on a particular screen.
1280 × 1024 or 1600 × 1200?
These are common choices for a 19-inch CRT, but they make different trade-offs. The table below compares them; the refresh rates shown are documented examples, not guarantees for every monitor.

HP’s P4815A guide lists 1280 × 1024 at 85 Hz as recommended and 1600 × 1200 at 75 Hz as the maximum for that mode. Its stated scan ranges are 30–95 kHz horizontal and 50–160 Hz vertical. Those limits belong to that model; another CRT may have different limits. Tom’s Hardware explains that resolution and refresh rate are constrained by pixel rate and horizontal scan frequency, so a monitor’s maximum vertical refresh figure does not mean it can achieve that rate at every resolution.

The aspect ratio is worth checking: 1280 × 1024 is 5:4, while many 19-inch CRT tubes are 4:3. A 4:3 image such as 1600 × 1200 can match the tube’s shape more closely. The HP P4815A guide specifies an 18.0-inch (353 mm) viewable image, illustrating that the usable display area is smaller than the nominal 19-inch size.

How to choose the refresh rate
Choose a refresh rate that the manual explicitly supports at your selected resolution. HP’s P920 manual advises using the highest supported refresh rate for the chosen resolution to avoid flicker and minimize eye strain. That does not mean selecting the monitor’s highest listed refresh number regardless of resolution: the valid pairing matters.
- Use 1280 × 1024 at 85 Hz if that exact combination appears in your monitor’s supported modes.
- Use 1600 × 1200 at 75 Hz only if the manual lists it and the image remains stable and well focused.
- If the screen flickers, text is uncomfortable, or the picture is not clear, choose another documented mode rather than pushing the refresh rate beyond the model’s limits.
Set up the monitor safely
- Find the monitor’s exact model number and consult its manual. Identify supported resolution-and-refresh-rate pairs along with horizontal and vertical scan limits.
- In your computer’s display settings, select 1280 × 1024 at 85 Hz if the manual supports it. Adjust the monitor’s size and geometry controls as needed.
- If you want more desktop space, try 1600 × 1200 at 75 Hz only when the manual supports that combination. Check whether text remains readable and the image stays sharp and stable.
- If text is too small, return to 1280 × 1024 or try 1024 × 768 at the highest supported flicker-free refresh rate.
- If the monitor displays an out-of-range warning, stop using that setting and select a documented mode. Philips describes this condition as an input signal that is not a standard video mode or is outside the monitor’s scanning range.
Check readability and image quality
Resolution alone does not determine how good a CRT image looks. Text size, the refresh rate available at that resolution, focus, convergence, and geometry all matter. A higher resolution can provide more workspace, but fine text may become harder to read; the image should also remain focused and stable across the screen. Choose the mode that works well for your eyes and your particular monitor, not simply the largest number in the settings menu.

If you are connecting a computer to an analog CRT input, verify the connector on both devices. The HP P4815A guide specifies a 15-pin mini D-sub analog RGB input; compatible equipment typically uses a 15-pin VGA (DE-15) cable. If the computer has no analog video output, an active VGA-to-HDMI converter may be needed, but check the exact converter and monitor compatibility before buying.
