Activision is developing the next Halo title, but Xbox has not announced its name, format, story, release window, or platforms. The assignment gives Activision a new, purpose-built team separate from its ongoing development and plans for Call of Duty; it does not establish that Halo is becoming a Call of Duty-style game. Meanwhile, Halo Studios says it will continue supporting existing games and the community.
What has Xbox confirmed about the next Halo game?
In an announcement on September 22, 2026, Xbox said Activision will develop the next Halo title through a “new, purpose-built team” separate from ongoing development and plans for Call of Duty. Xbox has not disclosed the next title’s name, genre or format, story, release window, or platforms. There is no confirmed release year or basis to say the game will borrow Call of Duty’s design, release cadence, or other features.

What will Halo Studios do?
Halo Studios will retain a small team to support the Halo community and games already in market, according to Xbox’s September 2026 update. That distinguishes the continuing support role from development of the next title, which Xbox assigned to Activision.

The same announcement said 268 roles were being eliminated across Halo Studios, other first-party studios, and Xbox Game Studios management and central functions. Xbox did not give a Halo-specific count, so the total should not be read as the number of job cuts at Halo Studios.
Is Halo Infinite still supported?
Halo’s official esports update said Halo Infinite would continue to receive support and some online and LAN competition in 2026. It also said official Halo Championship Series competition would not return with a new title during 2026. Those statements describe the plan announced for that year; they do not establish what support will look like after 2026. See Halo’s esports update.
What can players play while the next title is unannounced?
Halo: Campaign Evolved
Xbox’s June 7, 2026 Showcase recap said Halo: Campaign Evolved launched on July 28, 2026, for Xbox, Steam, and PlayStation, with day-one availability through Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. Xbox also noted a Collector’s Edition. These details describe that release, not the unannounced Activision-led game; availability of a particular edition can change. Read Xbox’s Showcase recap.

Do the earlier Unreal Engine 5 projects tell us what Activision is making?
No. In a 2024 post, Halo Studios said it was working on multiple projects using Unreal Engine 5. It described Project Foundry as research and training, “Neither a game nor a tech demo.” That information predates the September 2026 organizational change and does not establish whether those projects continued, were transferred, or were cancelled. In the same post, then-studio head Pierre Hintze said, “So we’re not just going to try improve the efficiency of development, but change the recipe of how we make Halo games. So, we start a new chapter today.” That 2024 statement describes the earlier studio announcement, not details of Activision’s current project.
What has Activision said about its goal?
GamesRadar+ reported in September 2026 that Activision described its aim as: “Our goal is clear: make the greatest Halo game ever, worthy of its universe and legacy, while staying true to what made players love it in the first place.” That is an ambition, not a release commitment or evidence of specific design choices.
