In 2023, the likely future of batteries was not one new chemistry replacing lithium-ion. The nearer-term story was lithium-ion adapting through established variants such as LFP, alongside fast-growing grid storage and selective development of sodium-ion and solid-state batteries. The figures below describe the 2023 market or forecasts made at the time; a later International Energy Agency (IEA) report published in 2024 provides a retrospective on 2023, not a real-time estimate of today’s market.
What did the battery outlook look like in 2023?
Lithium-ion remained the dominant chemistry for both electric vehicles (EVs) and energy storage. Its flexibility matters: manufacturers can use different lithium-ion chemistries to respond to changing mineral availability, prices and application needs, rather than relying on a single battery recipe. The IEA’s 2023 Global EV Outlook described a market still centered on lithium-ion, with alternatives developing alongside it.
A later IEA account, Batteries and Secure Energy Transitions (2024), put the scale of the shift into context: lithium-ion battery prices had fallen from USD 1,400 per kilowatt-hour in 2010 to less than USD 140 per kilowatt-hour in 2023. The same report said lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries accounted for 40% of EV sales and 80% of new battery storage in 2023. These are historical figures for that year, not current market-share estimates.

Batteries are useful beyond vehicles. Grid-connected storage can shift electricity across short periods, provide services that help keep the power system operating, and relieve congestion. It can also make variable renewable generation more useful by storing electricity when it is available and supplying it when needed.

The IEA reported that power-sector battery deployment grew by more than 130% year on year in 2023, adding 42 GW to electricity systems globally. That deployment figure describes the 2023 increase; it does not, by itself, establish how much capacity was added in later years. The IEA’s account of the expansion and its role in energy and climate goals is available in its 2023 battery deployment update.
Which battery technologies were advancing?
The options differ in maturity and in what they are designed to optimize. A chemistry that is attractive for a stationary system may be a poor fit for a long-range car, where energy stored per unit of weight and volume matters more.

| Technology | What it offered in the 2023 outlook | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Lithium-ion, including LFP | Established and adaptable across EVs and storage; LFP already had substantial 2023 market shares. | IEA figures for LFP are 40% of EV sales and 80% of new battery storage in 2023, as reported in 2024; they are not present-day estimates. IEA (2024) |
| Sodium-ion | Uses sodium rather than lithium, making it a possible complement where material availability or cost is important. Stationary storage and shorter-range urban vehicles are plausible fits. | Lower energy density can limit appeal where maximum vehicle range is the priority. Cost advantages depend on scenarios and are not a retail-price guarantee. IEA (2023) |
| Solid-state | Potential performance gains made it a longer-term technology to watch. | The IEA’s 2024 report described commercial availability as on track for beyond 2030. That is an outlook, not a guaranteed launch, affordable vehicle production date or mass-adoption timetable. IEA (2024) |
Lithium-ion and LFP: improvement within the incumbent
LFP’s strong 2023 presence illustrates why battery progress does not require a wholesale switch to a new chemistry. Different lithium-ion variants can serve different performance and supply-chain needs. The IEA’s 2023 EV outlook also treated lithium-ion as the continuing basis of the EV market, while tracking emerging alternatives rather than describing an imminent handover.
Sodium-ion: a complement for selected uses
Sodium-ion attracted interest because it avoids lithium and may use lower-cost materials. But no chemistry wins on cost alone: its lower energy density is more consequential in a vehicle designed for long range than in a stationary installation with fewer weight and space constraints. The UK Department for Science, Innovation and Technology’s March 2023 assessment of novel batteries likewise places emerging technologies in the context of differing applications and supply chains, rather than a single universal replacement.

In its 2024 assessment, the IEA said sodium-ion production costs can be 30% lower than LFP battery costs, and projected sodium-ion would make up less than 10% of EV batteries to 2030 in the stated outlook. The cost comparison is an assessment, not a guaranteed cost for every producer or buyer; the EV figure is a forecast, not a measured result for 2030.
Solid-state: potential, with timing still uncertain
Solid-state batteries are promising because of potential performance gains, but a forecast of commercial availability beyond 2030 should not be read as a promise of mass-market vehicles on that date. Commercial availability, high-volume manufacturing, affordability and widespread adoption are separate milestones. The 2024 IEA outlook supports treating solid-state as a longer-term prospect, not the answer to what most buyers would use next.

How should you judge what comes next?
There is no useful universal ranking of battery chemistries. The right comparison depends on what the battery must do and on whether a technology can be manufactured and supplied at the necessary scale.
- For long-range vehicles: energy density and weight matter, which makes sodium-ion’s lower energy density a relevant limitation.
- For stationary storage: weight and energy density can be less restrictive, while shifting electricity, ancillary services and congestion relief are important sources of value.
- For cost and supply resilience: compare material exposure and production assumptions. A projected cost advantage is not the same as a guaranteed purchase price.
- For judging maturity: distinguish established lithium-ion markets from emerging sodium-ion applications and longer-term solid-state forecasts.
- Across applications: chemistry is only part of the outcome. Manufacturing scale, supply chains, safety, recycling and infrastructure also shape what can be deployed; no one technology is expected to serve every transport, aerospace and grid use.
What the 2023 outlook did—and did not—tell us
In 2023, the evidence pointed to continued lithium-ion dominance, meaningful progress within that family, and growing use of batteries on electricity networks. Sodium-ion had plausible niches rather than a clear path to displacing EV lithium-ion, while solid-state remained a longer-term possibility. The 2024 IEA report adds retrospective 2023 figures and later forecasts, but neither those forecasts nor the 2023 outlook establish exact future market winners or current outcomes beyond the dates they cover.
