The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered is a free upgrade for existing owners, not a remake. Released September 29, 2026, it refreshes rendering, combat behavior, menus, accessibility and platform features while keeping the existing RPG and its story intact. The changes are broad, but their exact features vary by platform.
Who gets the Remastered upgrade, and what does it include?
CD PROJEKT RED says owners of any previously purchased version can upgrade free within the same platform ecosystem. The release is available on PC through Steam, GOG, Epic Games Store and Battle.net, as well as PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2. The upgrade also includes Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine for owners of the game on those listed platforms. Check your platform account library before buying another copy. CD PROJEKT RED announced the release and upgrade on September 29, 2026.
This is a substantial polish pass on the existing game, not a rebuilt version or a replacement story. The December 2022 Complete Edition announcement concerned an earlier next-generation release; its mode descriptions should not be treated as the platform-specific feature list for this 2026 Remastered release.
What changed in the game?
Rendering, lighting and visual effects
The publisher’s September 2026 notes describe native DirectX 12 rendering with multithreading, an improved shading model, updated textures and models drawing on assets from The Witcher 3 HD Reworked Project, improved grass and foliage lighting, revised Sign and skill effects, updated tone mapping, Ground Truth Ambient Occlusion, ray-traced local shadows, updated screen-space reflections and shadows, HDR calibration changes, and improvements to motion blur, subsurface scattering, terrain and materials. The update also adds image-based lighting and reworked bloom. These are listed changes, not independent benchmark findings or a guarantee of a particular visual result on every system.

Skills, monsters and movement
The skill tree has been reorganized around prerequisites, with three ranks per skill. Skill values and synergies have been rebalanced, some skills renamed, and skill points reset as a result of the changes. Many non-boss monsters have polished behavior. Movement and animation have also been refined, with new finishers and idle animations, plus a horse-control sensitivity slider.
Camera options include a wider-FOV exploration camera and a dynamic combat camera. These adjustments change how the existing adventure plays and looks; they do not add a new main story.
Menus and everyday quality of life
- A reorganized skill-tree layout and easier quest tracking on the map.
- More map markers and cleaner minimap options.
- Combined quest notifications, grouped nearby loot, a loot feed and item tooltips.
- A time-lapse during meditation.
- The ability to collect loot without dismounting Roach.

Photo Mode and accessibility
Expanded Photo Mode adds character placement, poses and expressions, camera locking, saved camera presets, environment presets, aspect-ratio controls, a first-person camera, camera-collision controls, weather and time controls, composition guides, NPC hiding and placeable props.

A new accessibility settings section includes the Bard’s Ballad preset, which CD PROJEKT RED designed to simplify selected mechanics and reduce cognitive load. Separate configurable options include vitality regeneration, infinite breath, item and boat durability, item weight, boat speed and the ability to toggle Witcher Sense.
Mods
The upgrade adds in-game cross-platform mod support through mod.io and improvements for REDkit. According to the official update instructions, browsing and installing mods requires a CD PROJEKT RED account connected to mod.io.

Will your PC run The Witcher 3 Remastered?
Use the current official PC requirements for hardware guidance rather than assuming every PC benefits equally from the update. CD PROJEKT RED says its expected FPS targets are based on QA tests and that occasional fluctuations may occur; results vary with system configuration, graphics settings and output resolution. The page also says an SSD is required for the technical enhancements.
Windows 10 may still run the game, but CD PROJEKT RED no longer develops or tests on that operating system and cannot guarantee compatibility or performance. The listed PC features include demanding options such as ray tracing and Path Tracing, so check requirements for your intended settings instead of treating those features as universal performance targets.
What was the documented launch-week patch status?
On October 1, 2026, CD PROJEKT RED posted Patch 5.00b and PC Hotfix 5.00c. Patch 5.00b listed a fix for DLSS availability in the Xbox Play Anywhere PC version, along with lighting and parity adjustments. Hotfix 5.00c listed fixes for saving and loading when the Documents path contained special characters, voice volume, a HairWorks-related performance and visual issue, telemetry settings, GOG achievements and launching the Classic 1.32 version, as well as visual adjustments in Velen. The publisher said it was continuing to investigate reported issues. This describes the status documented on October 1; it does not establish whether every issue was resolved later or remains present.
Is the free upgrade worth installing?
If you already own the game in the relevant platform ecosystem, the practical first step is to check your library for the free upgrade rather than repurchasing it. The most meaningful changes for returning players are the combined rendering and lighting pass, skill-tree rework, expanded interface options, Photo Mode, accessibility settings and platform-specific additions. Players expecting a remake, a new main story or one uniform feature set across all platforms should adjust those expectations: the publisher describes an upgrade to the existing RPG, and its feature list differs by platform.
