Google announced Gemini 2.5 Pro Preview (I/O edition) on May 6, 2025, making an updated model available to developers ahead of Google I/O. The company’s main emphasis was stronger coding capability—particularly creating interactive web apps—along with improvements to code editing, code transformation, and complex agentic workflows. It was an early-access preview, not the stable release.
What Google announced on May 6
Google said it had originally planned to release the update at I/O, scheduled for May 20, but moved it forward so developers could start building with it sooner. The announcement, attributed to Tulsee Doshi, Senior Director of Product Management, called the release “early access to Gemini 2.5 Pro Preview (I/O edition).” Google’s May 6 announcement described it as an updated version of Gemini 2.5 Pro, with coding as the headline improvement.
The “I/O edition” label identifies that particular preview release; it does not mean the model was already the final, generally available version. Google’s announcement presented it as a preview for early access.

Other coding and agentic tasks
The May 6 announcement also cited code transformation, code editing, and complex agentic workflows. These are Google’s descriptions of the update; the announcement did not provide independent test results establishing how much better it performs on each task.
Where developers could try it
Google named Gemini API access through Google AI Studio and Vertex AI as routes for developers. These are the platforms identified in the subsequent June 5 update announcement, which also said its upgraded preview was rolling out in the Gemini app. Availability can vary by product and rollout; the announcements do not establish access in every region or account.

At Google I/O on May 20, Google also discussed changes across Gemini 2.5 Pro and Flash and introduced Deep Think as an experimental enhanced reasoning mode for Pro. That was a later announcement about the model family, not a reason to treat the May 6 I/O edition preview as a stable release. Google’s I/O 2025 update describes those announcements.

What the model identifiers mean
Google’s Gemini API reference currently identifies the model code as gemini-2.5-pro and lists June 2025 as its latest update. That is distinct from the older preview identifier gemini-2.5-pro-preview-03-25, which Google’s deprecations page lists with a December 2, 2025 shutdown date and gemini-3.1-pro-preview as the recommended replacement. The lifecycle entry for that older preview should not be read as the shutdown date for the API reference’s gemini-2.5-pro model code. See the Gemini API model reference and Gemini API deprecations page for Google’s current documentation.
