To understand what she is putting on her skin or taking as a supplement, start with the current package label. An ingredient scanner can help find a product or explain a rating, but it cannot certify safety or replace checking the label and getting medical advice about a known allergy or reaction.

What a cosmetic ingredient list can—and cannot—tell you

For retail cosmetics in the United States, ingredients generally appear under common or usual names and in descending order of predominance. There are exceptions: ingredients present at 1% or less and color additives may be listed without regard to predominance. Some small packages and distribution arrangements also have specific labeling rules. These conventions can help you identify what is declared, but they do not reveal exact concentrations. See the FDA’s guide to cosmetic ingredient names and summary of cosmetics labeling requirements.

A label is not FDA approval

Most cosmetics and cosmetic ingredients do not need FDA premarket approval, though certain color additives are an exception. Companies and individuals marketing cosmetics are responsible for ensuring products are safe when used as labeled or customarily. An ingredient declaration therefore tells you what the manufacturer lists; it does not mean FDA assessed or certified the product. FDA explains this distinction on its page about cosmetic ingredients.

Marketing terms may not answer allergy questions

FDA says there is no federal definition for “hypoallergenic,” “fragrance-free,” or “for sensitive skin.” Those phrases do not guarantee that a product lacks a particular trigger. A label may also list “fragrance” or “perfume” generally without naming every component. If you know what causes a reaction, check the ingredient declaration for it; if the wording leaves a question, contact the manufacturer listed on the package. FDA’s allergens in cosmetics guidance offers further advice.

How to read a Supplement Facts panel

A Supplement Facts panel includes serving size, servings per container, dietary ingredients, and amounts per serving. Those are label disclosures, not FDA confirmation before sale that the supplement is safe or effective. FDA does not approve supplements for safety and effectiveness before they are sold. Its consumer guide to dietary supplements explains the distinction.

Check the serving information alongside the amounts: the amount shown is per serving, so the serving size matters when interpreting the panel. This guide does not assess any particular supplement or ingredient.

Where ingredient-scanning services fit

Scanning services can make product lookup more convenient, but coverage and methods differ. A score is the service’s assessment, not a regulator’s determination or an individualized medical judgment. Before relying on an app, check whether it covers the product and category you care about, how it explains its scoring or ingredient flags, and what it does when a product is missing or its formula changes. The services below describe their own features; those descriptions do not establish comparative accuracy.

Service What its own page says What to check
Yuka Yuka says its service analyzes food and cosmetic products, provides a product sheet, and can recommend similar products. It also describes a premium version and says brands and manufacturers do not fund it. Yuka’s application page Confirm that the specific item is listed and read the product sheet and the service’s explanation rather than treating a rating as a safety finding.
EWG Healthy Living EWG says its app can scan or search personal-care products and access Skin Deep cosmetics ratings. Its FAQ says some categories, including supplements, may not qualify for a score. EWG’s Healthy Living App FAQ Check whether the particular product and category are covered and how the service explains its rating. An absent score does not establish that a product is either safe or unsafe.

For either service, use a scan as a route to information, not as a substitute for inspecting the current package. A product can be reformulated, or an entry may be unavailable; verify the actual label and consult the service’s method for what its flags mean.

A practical way to check a product

  1. Read the package in good light. Find the cosmetic ingredient declaration or Supplement Facts panel. Small print can be hard to inspect; a handheld magnifying glass may help you read it, but it does not interpret ingredients or establish safety.
  2. Check the relevant label details. For cosmetics, look for the ingredient names and remember that order is not an exact concentration scale. For supplements, note serving size as well as amounts per serving.
  3. Use a scanner only as a lookup aid. Search or scan the product, review how the service explains its rating or ingredient flags, and note whether the exact product is covered.
  4. For a known allergy or reaction, verify and seek appropriate advice. Check the current package and ask the manufacturer about unclear labeling. Do not rely on a scanner score alone; consult a qualified health professional about a reaction or ingredient concern.
