In the attacks the Associated Press examined in its September 27, 2026 reporting, police said more than one gunman was involved, and the motives they described were usually criminal rather than ideological. The most frequently cited drivers are gang fights over territory and control, illegal mining, drug markets, extortion, and, in some cases, suspected revenge. Those are patterns and investigative leads. They do not establish a single cause for every shooting.
How South Africa defines a mass shooting
There is no standard global definition of “mass shooting.” AP reported that South African police count an attack as a mass shooting when three or more people are shot in a single incident. Other datasets use different victim thresholds, inclusion rules, or time windows, so a figure from one source cannot be placed directly beside a figure from another.
How these attacks differ from the lone-gunman pattern
The lone-gunman stereotype usually involves one shooter, a single target or a crowd chosen for a personal or ideological reason, and a motive the shooter explains or leaves behind. The South African incidents reported in 2026 tend to differ on several points. The comparison describes patterns commonly reported in South Africa. It does not mean that every attack in South Africa involves several people, or that attacks elsewhere are always lone-actor events.
| Factor | Common lone-gunman framing | Pattern reported in South African mass shootings |
|---|---|---|
| Number of assailants | One shooter | Multiple gunmen. AP said police reported multiple gunmen in all three shootings it covered in the week of its September 2026 report, and in six of seven nationally prominent shootings since December 2025. These are AP’s selected cases, not an official full count. |
| Reported motive | Personal grievance or ideology, often explained by the shooter | Criminal motives such as gang turf or control disputes, illegal mining, drug selling, and extortion, as described by police and authorities |
| Typical setting | Public venue chosen by the attacker | Bars, shops near entertainment venues, homes, and streets in low-income townships, as described in AP’s reporting |
| Strength of evidence for motive | Often stated by the attacker or established in an investigation | Frequently an investigative lead or a description by authorities. Motives can change as investigations proceed. |
What is driving the violence
Authorities have linked many incidents to criminal gangs. The drivers below are listed separately because they are different phenomena, and an attack can involve more than one of them or none of them.
#1 Best Overall
Gang turf and control disputes
A report by Parliament’s research unit on the Cape Flats describes rival gangs fighting over turf, with shootings happening in residential areas, inside homes, and in open spaces. Incidents are often labelled “gang related” by police and the public. The same report warns that non-affiliated adults and children can be among those killed, so a victim’s suspected affiliation should not be treated as established, and a shooting should not be assumed to be gang-related merely because gangs operate in the area.
Illegal mining
AP describes illegal-mining gangs operating around the gold-mining areas of Johannesburg, where groups compete for control of mining sites and the trade around them. Authorities have linked violence in these areas to this competition. The reporting does not put a number on how many shootings are tied to illegal mining.

Drug markets and extortion
AP also describes drug-selling and extortion rackets in other places, including Cape Town. Here the violence is tied to control of local markets and to pressure on businesses and residents, rather than to a single dispute.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesRevenge as a possible lead
In the September 2026 shooting at Wedela, police were investigating revenge as a possible lead because one victim was connected to an earlier shooting. That was a line of inquiry, not a proven motive. Cases like this show why a reported motive should be read as the status the authorities gave it on the date they gave it.
Rank #3
Who is exposed
AP’s reporting places recent attacks in low-income townships near Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Durban. Residents in affected communities have raised concerns about gangs and illegal guns, and the reporting says that distance from police stations and poor street lighting can increase vulnerability. AP describes poorer communities as bearing a disproportionate burden. That is the reporting’s description of who is exposed. It is not a finding that poverty causes the violence.
The numbers, and what each one measures
Several figures circulate in coverage of South African shootings. They measure different things, cover different places and periods, and should not be added together or compared directly.
Rank #4
| Figure | Value | Source, date, and scope |
|---|---|---|
| Victims of the three AP-covered shootings in six days | At least 38 killed and nearly 30 wounded | AP, 2026. Count for the specific incidents in the report, not a national annual statistic. |
| Gang-related murders in Western Cape | 208 of 1,068 murders | Parliamentary research unit report, January to March 2025. Western Cape only, one quarter. |
| Firearm murders in Western Cape | 590 of 1,068 murders | Same report and quarter. Shows firearm-involved murders in the province, not mass shootings specifically. |
| Gang-related attempted murders in Western Cape | 273 of 1,143 attempted murders | Same report and quarter. Western Cape only. |
| Firearm attempted murders in Western Cape | 699 of 1,143 attempted murders | Same report and quarter. Western Cape only. |
| Firearms recovered by police | 6,372 firearms, excluding SAPS-owned weapons | South African Police Service annual report, fiscal year 2024/25. Largest provincial totals: KwaZulu-Natal 1,552, Western Cape 1,538, Gauteng 1,355. These are recoveries, not guns used in mass shootings. |
The Western Cape figures are useful for seeing how gang violence and firearms appear in the broader murder count for one province and one quarter. They cannot tell a reader how many mass shootings occurred, how many people were shot in them, or how many were gang-related, because they do not count incidents by victim threshold.
How authorities are responding
The SAPS annual report describes the Firearms Control Act framework as intended to prevent the spread of illegally possessed firearms, remove them from society, improve control over legal firearms, and promote responsible ownership. The report also records firearm recoveries and operations against gang-related crime, illicit mining, drug trafficking, taxi-related violence, political assassinations, and faction disputes. These are descriptions of policy and activity. The sources reviewed do not show that these operations have reduced mass shootings.
Best Value
AP reported that President Cyril Ramaphosa deployed soldiers in March 2026 for a yearlong operation supporting police against organised-gang violence, with a focus on illegal-mining gangs around Johannesburg. The deployment is a government response. Whether it changes the pattern of attacks is not yet established by the reporting.
What the evidence does not establish
No complete, comparable official national series of mass shootings was found in the sources. The AP figures cover selected high-profile attacks. The Western Cape figures cover broad murder and attempted-murder categories for one province and one quarter. The firearm-recovery totals describe weapons seized, not weapons used in attacks. These figures should not be combined as if they shared a definition, denominator, geography, or time window.
Motives and suspect counts also change as investigations proceed. When you read a claim that a shooting was gang-related, revenge-driven, or carried out by several men, check who made the claim, when they made it, and whether it is a confirmed finding or an investigative line.
Recommended Free Tools
- Police threshold for a mass shooting: three or more people shot in one attack, as AP reported it.
- Motive descriptions: usually from police or authorities, and often provisional.
- Victim affiliation: not established by a shooting itself; a person’s suspected gang link should be treated as unverified unless authorities confirm it.
The strongest supported conclusion is narrower than the headline comparison. In the South African cases reported in 2026, multiple gunmen and criminal motives appear often enough to distinguish them from the lone-gunman pattern, and authorities link many of them to gang control, illegal mining, drug markets, and extortion. Whether that holds across all South African mass shootings, or how common each motive is, cannot be settled from the material available.
