To play Nintendo Switch Sports, you need the game, a supported Nintendo Switch-family console, and compatible Joy-Con controllers. The game does not support Handheld Mode, so plan to play in TV Mode. A Leg Strap is optional for general play and needed only for supported Soccer play; online play additionally requires internet access, a Nintendo Account, and Nintendo Switch Online.
What you need for the basic setup
- The game: Nintendo Switch Sports, either physical or download software.
- A supported console: Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch – OLED Model, or Nintendo Switch 2.
- Compatible Joy-Con: Supported arrangements vary by sport and mode. Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers and Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controllers are not compatible.
- A TV setup: Nintendo states that “Nintendo Switch Sports does not support Handheld Mode.” Nintendo recommends TV Mode; see its compatibility FAQ.
Do not assume every player needs an extra pair of Joy-Con. The controller arrangement depends on the sport and player configuration, and Nintendo’s FAQ does not give a complete sport-by-sport count for every local multiplayer setup.

Which controllers work?
Nintendo lists paired Joy-Con, a single Joy-Con for some configurations, and Joy-Con used with a Leg Strap for applicable Soccer play. The supported choice depends on the sport and mode. Check the on-screen controller prompts for the activity you choose rather than buying an extra set based on a universal player count.

Neither Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers nor Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controllers are supported for the game. A Switch Lite is also not a straightforward choice: the game cannot be played in Handheld Mode, and a standard TV-mode setup is not available on that console.

When do you need the Leg Strap?
The Leg Strap is for Soccer Leg-Strap Mode, not a requirement for starting the game or playing every sport. Nintendo says Joy-Con 2 controllers are not compatible with the strap. Its attachment instructions show how to secure a compatible Joy-Con.
To choose Leg-Strap Mode, highlight Soccer and press X in Play Globally. In Play Locally or Play with Friends, press + on the controller-holding screen. Physical package contents can differ by edition and region; Nintendo’s cited pages do not establish that every physical copy includes the strap, so check the specific product listing if you want one in the box. Do you need Nintendo Switch Online?
You do not need a Nintendo Switch Online membership for every local or offline activity. You do need internet access, a Nintendo Account, and an active Nintendo Switch Online membership to play online. If you select Play Globally without a membership, Nintendo says you can play only a trial competition against computer competitors; it is not full online play. The official game page and support FAQ explain these conditions.

Nintendo documents smartphone-app voice chat for Play with Friends. It requires Nintendo Switch Online, and Nintendo Accounts belonging to users under 13 cannot use this voice chat. Check Nintendo’s FAQ for the applicable details.

Optional wired LAN play
For a local group using multiple consoles on a wired network, Nintendo’s LAN setup supports up to four consoles and up to two players per console—up to eight players in total. How many can participate in a given sport at once depends on that sport. Each console needs a copy of Nintendo Switch Sports, physical or download software. Nintendo’s LAN play instructions also say that a Switch Lite needs a licensed accessory, such as HORI’s Dual USB PlayStand, to connect a USB LAN adapter.
Set up and play safely
- Install or insert Nintendo Switch Sports on a supported console.
- Connect the console to a TV and select TV Mode; the game does not support Handheld Mode.
- Pair compatible Joy-Con and follow the game’s prompts for the selected sport and player arrangement.
- If you want Soccer Leg-Strap Mode, attach a compatible Joy-Con to the strap and select the mode using the in-game controls.
- For online play, connect to the internet, use a Nintendo Account, and make sure the account has an active Nintendo Switch Online membership.
Nintendo advises wearing Joy-Con wrist straps, leaving adequate room to move, and staying aware of your surroundings. Follow the safety guidance on the official game page.
