To play Nintendo Switch Sports, you need the game, a compatible Nintendo Switch system, and compatible Joy-Con controllers. You do not need the Leg Strap for most play, and you do not need Nintendo Switch Online for local multiplayer. Online play does require a Nintendo Switch Online membership, an internet connection, and a Nintendo Account.
What you need to get started
- Game: Nintendo Switch Sports, as a physical or digital copy.
- Compatible console: Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch – OLED Model, or Nintendo Switch 2, according to Nintendo’s current compatibility FAQ. Nintendo’s US store listing says the game is supported on Switch 2 with behavior consistent with Nintendo Switch: Nintendo Switch Sports product page.
- Controllers: compatible Joy-Con controllers. Pro Controllers, including Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controllers, are not compatible. Supported Joy-Con arrangements vary by sport and play style; see Nintendo’s controller and play-style list.
- A play area: Nintendo recommends TV mode for the best experience and says the game does not support handheld mode.
The game includes eight sports: Basketball, Golf, Soccer, Volleyball, Bowling, Tennis, Badminton, and Chambara. The Nintendo store listing marks Golf and Basketball as dependent on the required software update.
Do you need the Leg Strap?
No, not for the game as a whole. The Leg Strap is required only if you want to play Soccer using the leg-strap play style. The physical edition includes one; digital buyers can purchase one separately if they want that mode. Check the contents of the listing in your market, since physical-edition contents can vary.

Using the strap
Nintendo’s instructions say to insert a left Joy-Con. In Nintendo Switch Sports, position the strap at the center of either thigh, secure it so it will not slip, and tighten it enough to stay in place without overtightening. The strap is designed for Ring Fit Adventure and Nintendo Switch Sports, but it is incompatible with Joy-Con 2 controllers. See Nintendo’s Leg Strap instructions.

Which edition should you choose?

If you select Play Globally without a membership, Nintendo says you can try a competition against computer competitors; that is not full online play.
What controllers do you need for multiplayer?
The US product listing gives a range of one to four players on one system and one to two online. Those are not a promise that every sport supports the maximum number at once: Nintendo notes that simultaneous participants depend on the sport, and additional accessories may be required.

Use the Joy-Con arrangement specified for your chosen sport and player count. You may need additional Joy-Con controllers for local multiplayer, but not every player necessarily needs a pair. Check the game’s mode and controller prompts before inviting a group; the compatible combinations are listed in Nintendo’s FAQ.
