A wireless home network connects devices in your home over radio signals, usually through Wi-Fi. A wireless router provides that local connection and commonly shares an internet connection supplied by a separate modem or an all-in-one internet gateway. Wi-Fi is the way devices connect wirelessly; it is not the internet service itself.

What a wireless home network includes

A home network is the group of devices connected within your home. Because it covers a limited area, it is a type of local area network, or LAN. With a wireless home network, devices use Wi-Fi rather than a cable for at least some of their connections. Computers, phones, televisions, cameras, voice assistants, and connected appliances can all be part of it.

The Federal Trade Commission describes Wi-Fi as a home’s wireless internet connection. More precisely, Wi-Fi is the wireless link between devices and the local network; an internet connection is a separate service that the network may provide. A home network can still connect local devices even if its internet service is unavailable. Cloudflare’s LAN overview explains the local-network distinction, and its router overview describes how routers connect networks. The FTC’s home Wi-Fi security guidance describes the usual household setup.

How Wi-Fi, the router, and the modem work together

Wi-Fi sends data over radio signals between a device and a wireless router or access point. The router directs traffic among devices on the local network and commonly connects that network to the internet. A modem or other ISP equipment supplies the internet-side connection. In many homes, one gateway box combines modem and router functions; the physical box is shared, but the jobs remain distinct.

  • Wi-Fi: The wireless connection a device uses to join the local network.
  • Router: The device that connects and directs traffic between the home network and, commonly, the internet.
  • Modem or ISP equipment: The equipment that provides the connection to the internet service provider’s network.

When a phone streams a video, for example, it sends and receives data over Wi-Fi to the router. The router forwards internet-bound traffic through the modem or gateway connection. Traffic between two devices on the same home network may remain local rather than traveling out to the internet.

Why wireless network security matters

Wi-Fi radio signals can extend beyond the walls of a home. If the network is not secured, someone nearby may be able to attempt to connect or exploit weak settings. The FTC recommends these practical steps; menu names and available options vary by router, so consult the manufacturer’s instructions for model-specific directions.

  1. Choose WPA3 Personal encryption if available, or WPA2 Personal if WPA3 is not supported.
  2. Change both the default administrator password and the Wi-Fi password. Use unique credentials rather than reusing passwords from other accounts.
  3. Install router software updates to address security and reliability issues.
  4. Consider enabling a guest network for visitors, so you do not have to share your primary Wi-Fi credentials and guest devices can be separated from the main network where the router supports that separation.
  5. Turn off remote management, WPS, and UPnP if you do not need them.

CISA’s wireless security document offers general background on changing defaults, encryption, firewalls, and patches. It was produced in 2006 and updated in 2008, so the FTC’s 2022 consumer guidance is the more current reference for the steps above.

When one router may not be enough

A router’s coverage depends on the home and the equipment; there is no basis here to assume every household needs extra hardware. If Wi-Fi does not reach part of the home, an additional wireless access point or a mesh system may be relevant, but the right setup depends on the layout and existing equipment. Before choosing hardware, check whether it meets your internet provider’s equipment requirements, supports WPA3 or WPA2, receives manufacturer software updates, and can cover the areas where you need a connection. The cited sources do not establish specific current models, prices, or performance comparisons.
