AI will matter in games when it changes what players can do or makes a meaningful new kind of game possible—not merely when it makes development faster behind the scenes. That is the test proposed by Rakim Reid in The Geekiary’s September 10, 2026 opinion article, “AI in Gaming Won’t Have a Half-Life 2 Moment.” The article argues that gaming has not yet seen such a breakthrough and forecasts, speculatively, that one could arrive by 2030.
What would count as an AI breakthrough in gaming?
The key distinction is between AI that improves the production pipeline and AI that changes the experience players get—or makes it possible for people to create games in a fundamentally different way. Faster asset production or lower development costs may matter to studios, but those gains alone do not necessarily give players a reason to see games differently.

Reid proposes three possible tests for a landmark AI game:
Recommended Free Tools
- Game creation becomes easier: AI substantially lowers the barrier to making a game, whether for developers or players.
- The experience depends on AI: The game is engaging and can scale, and its defining experience could not exist without AI.
- Development changes radically: AI makes creating games much more efficient or less expensive.
In Reid’s view, at least two of these tests would need to be met for AI to produce a lasting shift. This is a proposed standard, not an industry consensus or a measured scorecard. It also separates an important question: a production breakthrough might reshape how games are made without being immediately visible in play, while a new player-facing experience could matter even if it does not cut costs.
#1 Best Overall
- Amazing new graphics with pre-rendered cutscenes that look like they came from the movies
- More realistic physics - Objects have varied and appropriate mass, density and physical properties
- Incredibly advanced AI as enemies adapt, plan, improvise, and respond
- Hordes of new aliens and other enemies, plus a plethora of new guns and weapons
Why compare AI with Half-Life 2?
Valve’s Steam listing gives Half-Life 2’s release date as November 16, 2004. Reid uses it as a benchmark for a game associated with several changes at once: physics-based interaction, storytelling, and Steam distribution. The point is not that any single feature defines the game’s legacy, but that a landmark can be remembered for how its elements came together.
That comparison should be read as Reid’s interpretation of gaming history, not as a settled ranking of the most influential games. The broader question is whether AI can similarly become part of a game’s defining appeal, rather than a tool whose benefits are mostly felt by the people building it.
Rank #2
- Used Book in Good Condition
Could GoldenEye 007 be a better analogy?
Reid suggests GoldenEye 007 may be a closer comparison for genre-level change, citing its reported influence on console first-person shooters and multiplayer conventions. In this framing, the relevant legacy is not simply technical sophistication; it is a shift in what players expected from a type of game.
The two examples point to different ways a game can matter:
Rank #3
- Half-Life 2: A combination of interaction, storytelling, and distribution that Reid treats as a broad landmark.
- GoldenEye 007: An example Reid uses to illustrate influence on a genre and multiplayer conventions.
Neither analogy proves what an AI breakthrough will look like. They help clarify the standard: a memorable technology story is not enough if the game does not also change play, creation, or expectations.
What would an AI game need to do differently?
A useful way to judge a future claim is to ask what the game enables that would otherwise be impractical or impossible, and who experiences the difference. The same questions apply whether the proposed advance is a new kind of in-game behavior, player-authored content, or a development process that changes what a studio can ship.
Rank #4
- Sequel to the hit first-person shooter
- Scientist-with-a-crowbar Gordon Freeman joins a ragtag human resistance fighting extradimensional invaders for the survival of a conquered Earth
- Unnervingly realistic graphics the likes of which have not been witnessed outside of a motion picture or pre-rendered cut scene
- Realistic physics: objects have varied and appropriate mass, density, physical properties
- For 1 player
- New player experience: Can players do something meaningfully different, rather than encounter a familiar game with AI-generated dialogue or assets?
- Creation: Does AI make game-making accessible to people who could not previously build the experience they imagined?
- Dependence: Would removing AI destroy the game’s central appeal, or could conventional systems deliver essentially the same experience?
- Production impact: Are efficiency or cost gains substantial enough to affect the finished game or the wider industry?
These questions avoid treating “uses AI” as equivalent to “transforms gaming.” A feature can be novel without changing player expectations, and an internal tool can be valuable without producing a visible breakthrough.

Reid’s article suggests that an AI landmark could arrive by 2030, but that date is the author’s forecast—not an established release window, industry projection, or guarantee. The article’s broader point is that gaming may need a few years to discover what AI is genuinely good for.

It reports a hopeful view from Tim Willits, Saber Interactive’s chief creative officer: “Everyone has their own opinion,” Willits said, “and maybe I’m being too optimistic, but somebody will make the Half-Life 2 of AI. I’m making a silly example, but someone will make something that will change people’s minds. When Steam first came out, people were like, ‘I’m not going to put some silly program on my machine!’ Now if Steam went away, the end of the world would happen. I think, give the industry a few years and we’ll figure it out.” The quotation is attributed here to The Geekiary’s report; an original interview transcript is not established by that article.
The article also opens with a statement attributed to Assassin’s Creed creator Patrice Désilets while discussing AI generation in game-design pipelines: “We live in a world full of AI. Let’s be honest, just between ourselves,”. That quotation, too, is attributed to The Geekiary’s report rather than independently verified here. It illustrates the debate around using AI in production, but it does not by itself show that AI has changed what a game can be.
What players should watch for
The strongest evidence of a lasting shift will be a game whose value is not reducible to the fact that AI was used to make it. Look for a distinctive experience that relies on AI, a real expansion of who can create games, or production changes that alter what reaches players. Until a game demonstrates at least some of those effects, claims about a coming landmark remain predictions rather than proof that AI has had its defining moment.
