The Motley Fool’s September 29, 2026 comparison put a hypothetical $10,000 investment in SpaceX at its stated $150 opening price at $9,137. That is a dated calculation—not a live quote or a forecast. The phrase “SpaceX on black filter with Earth’s outline in background” is the image caption attached to the article, rather than a separate SpaceX product or investment offer.
What the $9,137 figure means
The Motley Fool’s article, published October 1, 2026, says $10,000 invested at its stated $150 IPO opening price would have been worth $9,137 using a September 29 price comparison. The figure is specific to those assumptions and that date. It should not be described as the investment’s value today without checking a current share price and recalculating.
The calculation concerns share-price value, not necessarily an investor’s realized proceeds. Actual results can differ with the execution price, fees, taxes, and any dividends. Those details are not part of the stated $9,137 figure.
SpaceX’s IPO price and first trading day
SpaceX priced 555,555,555 Class A shares at $135 per share. Its shares began trading on June 12, 2026, as SPCX on the Nasdaq Global Select Market and Nasdaq Texas. SpaceX said the offering generated approximately $85.7 billion in gross proceeds to the company.

The $135 offer price and the $150 opening price used in The Motley Fool’s hypothetical are different reference prices. The article’s $9,137 answer uses its stated $150 opening-price assumption; it is not a calculation based on buying at the $135 offer price.
What SpaceX reported after going public
For the quarter ended June 30, 2026, SpaceX reported revenue of $7.8 billion, up 92% from $4.1 billion in the year-earlier quarter, and a net loss of $541 million. Revenue growth and a quarterly loss are both relevant context, but neither determines what the stock will do next.

SpaceX’s quarterly filing describes increased capital spending on data centers, related infrastructure, and space launch facilities. These investments provide context for the company’s spending, but a single quarter’s reported results do not establish whether or when that spending will produce a return.

How to interpret an IPO-return headline
- Check the dates and prices. A return depends on the assumed purchase price and the comparison date. Do not treat a September 29 snapshot as a current market value.
- Separate company disclosures from commentary. The revenue and net-loss figures above are company-reported results. The $9,137 hypothetical is The Motley Fool’s calculation, and its discussion of volatility, valuation, and investment risk is analysis rather than a company forecast.
- Compare like with like. For another stock or asset, use matching start and end dates, clarify whether the comparison includes dividends, and account for fees and taxes consistently.
- Do not infer a prediction. A retrospective IPO calculation says what an investment would have been worth under specified past assumptions; it does not promise a future outcome.
