Wi‑Fi 6 uses 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz; Wi‑Fi 6E adds access to 6 GHz where local rules allow it; and Wi‑Fi 7 adds features such as Multi-Link Operation (MLO) and 320 MHz channels when the router, client, and spectrum rules support them. Choose based on your devices, coverage needs, available bands, and budget—not the generation number alone.
What do the Wi‑Fi 6, 6E, and 7 labels mean?
These labels identify Wi‑Fi generations, not a guarantee of a particular speed or coverage. Wi‑Fi 6 is associated with IEEE 802.11ax and operates on the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Wi‑Fi 6E is Wi‑Fi 6 extended to 6 GHz in places where regulations permit it. Wi‑Fi 7 is associated with 802.11be and adds capabilities including MLO and wider channels.

- Wi‑Fi 6: The relevant choice if you want Wi‑Fi 6 features on 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. Features associated with this generation include OFDMA and multi-user techniques.
- Wi‑Fi 6E: Adds 6 GHz support. That band can provide additional spectrum and wider channel choices, but both the router and connected device must support it, and local rules must permit the router’s operation.
- Wi‑Fi 7: Adds features such as MLO, which lets compatible devices use multiple links, and 320 MHz channels where 6 GHz spectrum is available for Wi‑Fi and the equipment supports the feature. The Wi‑Fi Alliance described these capabilities in its January 8, 2024 Wi‑Fi CERTIFIED 7 announcement.
Wi‑Fi 6E is not a higher-generation protocol than Wi‑Fi 6; its practical distinction is the added 6 GHz band.

What is the difference between Wi‑Fi 6 and Wi‑Fi 6E?
The difference is band support: Wi‑Fi 6 uses 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, while Wi‑Fi 6E can also use 6 GHz. That does not mean every 6E connection will be faster. The client must have a 6 GHz-capable radio, the router must support 6 GHz, and conditions and regulations must allow its use.

Before buying for 6 GHz, check the router’s regional version and the rules where you live. Regulations can specify which operating modes and power levels are allowed. For example, the U.S. Federal Register’s March 6, 2025 rulemaking publication describes low-power and very-low-power operation under specified conditions. Ofcom’s UK policy page discusses AFC-controlled higher-power use and low-power indoor policy separately: Enabling automated frequency coordination in the 6 GHz band. These are examples, not a complete survey of every country.
What does Wi‑Fi 7 add?
Wi‑Fi 7’s notable capabilities include MLO and 320 MHz channel widths. MLO can let a compatible client use multiple links; 320 MHz channels can use more channel bandwidth where 6 GHz is available. Neither capability is assured simply because a router carries a Wi‑Fi 7 label. The router and client need corresponding support, and spectrum rules affect which operations are available. TP-Link’s Deco BE65 Pro datasheet, dated March 7, 2024, cautions that Wi‑Fi 7 and features including MLO and 320 MHz operation require compatible client support.

A Wi‑Fi Alliance certificate identifies the TP-Link Archer BE800 as a Wi‑Fi 7 router, with a certification date of December 25, 2023. The certificate establishes that this product was certified in that category; it does not establish current stock, price, independent performance, or that it is the right router for a particular home. See the Wi‑Fi Alliance certificate.
Does my device support 6 GHz Wi‑Fi or Wi‑Fi 7?
Check the exact device model’s manufacturer specifications or support documentation. Look specifically for 6 GHz or Wi‑Fi 6E support if you want to connect to 6 GHz, and for Wi‑Fi 7, MLO, or 320 MHz support if you intend to use those features. A router cannot add radio capabilities its client device does not have.

Check the devices you use most and those you expect to add. If none can use a feature, that feature alone may not justify paying more for a router. Newer routers can still serve older clients, but those clients will not gain unsupported capabilities just by connecting to them.

- List the important client devices. Check which bands and Wi‑Fi features their radios support, especially 6 GHz, MLO, and 320 MHz if those matter to you.
- Assess coverage. Identify dead zones and consider whether router placement, an additional access point, or a mesh system would address them. A better coverage layout may matter more than a newer generation in a single router.
- Check the router’s practical fit. Compare supported bands, wired ports, mesh compatibility, software and support lifecycle, and total price.
- Verify local 6 GHz rules and the regional model. Do this before choosing a router primarily for 6 GHz access; permitted operation can differ by country and mode.
- Interpret speed claims cautiously. Treat speed-class figures as theoretical or vendor-defined unless they come from comparable testing. A generation label alone does not establish the speed, range, or latency you will get at home.
The right comparison is between the specific router, your client devices, your home’s coverage requirements, and the price—not between generation numbers in isolation.
