The oddity in the story of Jony Ive’s AI hardware startup io is how its investors became public: an earlier anonymous investment was later linked to io, and a Sutter Hill director’s congratulatory post identifying the firm as an investor was reportedly deleted. That sequence leaves questions about disclosure unanswered, but it is not evidence of a cover-up or misconduct.

What happened, and when did OpenAI’s deal close?

OpenAI announced its acquisition of io on May 21, 2025. In an update dated July 9, OpenAI said io’s team had officially merged with the company. Wilson Sonsini, counsel to Jony Ive and LoveFrom, said the transaction closed July 9 for approximately $6.5 billion in stock. OpenAI’s announcement and July update and Wilson Sonsini’s deal statement describe different parts of the timeline.

OpenAI said Ive and LoveFrom would remain independent while taking on design and creative responsibilities across OpenAI. The company’s announcement also said its collaboration with Ive and LoveFrom had begun two years earlier.

What does the approximately $6.5 billion figure mean?

It is an approximate aggregate stock value for the acquisition—not a published cash payout to each io investor. The Information described the transaction as including $1.5 billion for OpenAI’s existing ownership and another $5 billion in stock for the company. That breakdown is reported by The Information; Wilson Sonsini also described the overall deal as approximately $6.5 billion in stock.

Zero to One: Notes on Startups, or How to Build the Future
  • If you want to build a better future, you must believe in secrets.
  • The great secret of our time is that there are still uncharted frontiers to explore and new inventions to create. In Zero to One, legendary entrepreneur and investor Peter Thiel shows how we can find singular ways to create those new things.

Those figures do not show what any particular investor received. The reporting cited here does not disclose the full cap table, each investor’s ownership, liquidation preferences, dilution, taxes, or individual distributions. A company-level acquisition value cannot by itself establish an investor’s realized return.

Which investors were named in reporting?

The Information named Thrive Capital, Maverick Capital, SV Angel, and Flat Capital among io’s investors, and reported that OpenAI’s Startup Fund had invested earlier. It put Thrive Capital’s investment at about $30 million. These are reported investor details, not a complete shareholder list or a schedule of proceeds. The Information’s reporting does not establish that its list is exhaustive.

Why did Flat Capital’s investment draw attention?

Flat Capital had previously announced an AI hardware investment without naming the company. Futurism later connected that investment to io, reporting that Flat Capital’s December 2024 portfolio announcement covered four companies, one unnamed, and that 70 percent—about $3.6 billion—was allocated to the anonymous hardware startup. That figure describes the reported allocation in Flat Capital’s announcement; it should not be read as a verified final amount invested in io. Futurism’s account links the anonymous investment to io.

What was the Sutter Hill post, and why was it deleted?

TechCrunch and Futurism reported that Luke Wroblewski, a Sutter Hill director, posted a congratulatory message identifying Sutter Hill as an io investor, then deleted it. Sutter Hill’s lack of comment was also noted in reporting. The sources do not establish why the post was removed, whether anyone asked for its removal, or whether there was a request for investors to stay quiet. TechCrunch’s investor report and Futurism’s coverage document the reported post and deletion.

What remains unknown?

  • The complete list of io shareholders and their ownership stakes.
  • How the aggregate stock consideration was distributed among shareholders, if at all, after accounting for the terms of their investments.
  • Why Wroblewski’s post was deleted and whether anyone requested that it be removed.

The public reporting supports a narrower conclusion: investor information emerged in fragments around a high-profile acquisition, including an anonymous investment later associated with io and a reported deleted investor post. It does not establish coordinated secrecy, improper conduct, or individual investor profits.
