Is GTA 6 the most expensive game ever developed? It may be among the most expensive, but the all-time claim is unverified. Take-Two’s reviewed fiscal 2025 and fiscal 2026 financial releases do not disclose a separate development budget for Grand Theft Auto VI, and the large figures circulating publicly are estimates with different scopes—not confirmed production costs.
What is GTA 6’s confirmed development budget?
No separate GTA VI development-budget figure appears in the reviewed Take-Two fiscal 2025 and fiscal 2026 results. Those releases report company-level financial performance and key revenue contributors, not a title-by-title GTA VI production budget. See Take-Two’s fiscal results.
That is a statement about those reviewed releases, not proof that no figure exists elsewhere or that Take-Two will never publish one. A final, separately attributable budget has not been established by the evidence available here.
Where do the billion-dollar GTA 6 estimates come from?
Published reports cite several estimates, but they differ in source and apparent scope. None should be described as an official Rockstar or Take-Two budget.

These amounts should not be averaged or treated as competing measurements of one consistently defined budget. The attributions and cost scopes are not shown to be equivalent.
Why can’t GTA 6 be ranked definitively?
A record claim needs more than a large estimate: it needs a confirmed GTA VI figure and comparable figures for other games. Many game budgets have never been disclosed, and reported totals may count different things. A reference list of expensive games warns that budgets are often undisclosed; the available GTA VI coverage likewise says the public figures do not establish a definitive ranking. - Final lifetime cost or spending to date: An estimate or incomplete total is not the same as a final budget.
- Disclosed figure or estimate: Each number needs its source, date, and status.
Until those measures line up, a list can at most rank reported budgets under a stated methodology—not prove the industry’s definitive most-expensive game.

Does GTA 6’s development timeline prove its cost?
No. GTA Playbook attributes to Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick the statement that GTA VI began development “in earnest” in 2020, after Red Dead Redemption 2. GTA Playbook’s report. That wording does not identify the start of pre-production, the number of staff, which cost categories were included, or the eventual total. A development timeline alone cannot establish a budget.

In a published earnings-call transcript, Take-Two Chairman and CEO Strauss Zelnick said: “The truth is that the real cost of a AAA video game is a whole lot lower today than it was 20 years ago.” Read the transcript. This is a general observation about game costs, not a GTA VI budget disclosure, so it does not confirm or refute any of the title-specific estimates.

Does the game’s price tell us what it cost to make?
No. A retail price is what a customer may pay for a copy; it is not evidence of development expenditure. GamesRadar has reported an $80 base price and PS5 and Xbox Series X platforms, but those are retail details that can change and should be checked against current listings.
