Water-altered rock on Mars shows that liquid water or water-bearing fluids changed the rock. That is important because water can make an environment habitable and leave minerals that preserve traces of past life—but it does not show that life existed. In Jezero Crater, NASA’s Perseverance rover has found water-related changes in both sedimentary and igneous rocks, while a separate sample from Cheyava Falls has been described as containing potential biosignatures, not confirmed evidence of life.
What does water-altered rock tell scientists?
When water-bearing fluids react with rock, they can change its minerals and leave features such as veins, altered grains, or new mineral deposits. Those changes are geological evidence of water-rock interaction. They can also help scientists reconstruct the conditions a rock experienced.
Three claims must be kept distinct:
- Water was present: minerals or textures indicate that water interacted with the rock.
- The environment may have been habitable: some wet environments could have supported microbial life.
- Life existed: this requires evidence that rules out non-biological explanations; water alteration alone cannot establish it.
Water is essential for life as we know it, but the first claim does not automatically prove either of the next two. NASA’s Mars science overview describes the broader search for evidence of past habitability and life.
What has Perseverance found in Jezero Crater?
Jezero preserves different kinds of rocks and settings, so its samples record more than one chapter of the crater’s history. Sedimentary deposits are associated with ancient river and lake activity; igneous rocks formed from cooled molten material and can record later interaction with water. NASA reports that Perseverance has found water-altered minerals in crater-floor rocks and is collecting a diverse set of samples for study. See NASA’s Perseverance science overview and its account of igneous rocks altered by water in Jezero.

The Margin Unit: a record of multiple water interactions
In a report published September 21, 2026, NASA/JPL described Perseverance’s exploration of the Margin Unit along Jezero’s inner crater rim. The rover analyzed more than 185 bedrock targets there. Higher-elevation rocks are coarse and crystalline, rich in olivine, and show little evidence of water interaction. Lower-elevation rocks show fractured olivine, silica between the grains, and carbonate-filled fractures.
NASA interprets these observations as evidence that the Margin Unit was a crossroads for aqueous systems rather than the product of a single, simple lake episode. In the proposed sequence, carbon-dioxide-rich groundwater reacted with olivine and left carbonate ridges in fractures. Scientists can infer the relative order of water interactions from the evidence, but the reported findings do not establish their absolute ages. The target count is a mission report figure, not a count of water episodes or possible life signs. The NASA/JPL Margin Unit report gives the details.

Why olivine, carbonate, and silica matter
On Earth, reactions between water and olivine can release hydrogen, which some microbes can use as an energy source. The same kinds of reactions can leave carbonate and silica. These minerals can potentially lock in traces of past microbial activity, if any was present. That makes the Margin Unit relevant to both habitability and preservation; it is not evidence that Martian microbes consumed hydrogen.
What is a potential biosignature?
A potential biosignature is a feature that could be associated with past life but needs further study before scientists can determine whether it has a biological origin. It is not a synonym for fossil, confirmed organism, or discovery of life. Mineral patterns and chemical traces can have non-biological explanations, so scientists assess them in context and compare possible causes.

What is the Cheyava Falls finding?
In July 2024, Perseverance encountered Cheyava Falls in the Bright Angel formation, an ancient riverbed in Jezero’s Neretva Vallis, and collected the Sapphire Canyon sample. NASA’s September 10, 2025 report described the sample as containing potential biosignatures following peer-reviewed publication. The designation remains provisional: further data or study are needed to determine whether life was present.
NASA’s earlier description of Cheyava Falls noted evidence of past water, organic material, and distinctive spots associated with chemical reactions that microbes could use for energy. Those observations prompted scientific interest, but they do not by themselves settle whether the features formed biologically. NASA’s accounts of the potential biosignatures in the Sapphire Canyon sample and the Cheyava Falls rock retain that distinction.

How do scientists evaluate a claim about ancient life?
Perseverance examines rock textures, mineralogy, elemental composition, and organic compounds. NASA says the rover can detect microscopic fossil-like structures and chemical changes that may have been left by ancient microbes. No single clue is enough on its own: the interpretation depends on whether multiple lines of evidence fit together and whether non-biological processes can explain them. NASA’s Jezero lake-history report explains why lake and delta rocks are scientifically interesting: they could have been habitable settings, and sedimentary deposits can entomb and preserve signs in the geologic record.

These distinctions keep evidence for water or habitability from being mistaken for evidence that life was present.
