The H3C Magic BE18000 was reported in June and July 2022 as the first Wi-Fi 7 router or access point offered for retail sale. It was an early device based on the developing IEEE 802.11be standard—not a router certified to finalized Wi-Fi 7 requirements. Its advertised peak of 18,443 Mbps was a product claim, not a measured home internet speed.
What was the first Wi-Fi 7 router?
The product behind the 2022 “first Wi-Fi 7 router” headline was H3C’s Magic BE18000. Network World reported on July 6, 2022 that it was the first Wi-Fi 7 access point offered for retail sale. Wi-Fi NOW’s contemporary coverage also described H3C’s announcement in June 2022 as a first.

That wording is specific to the early retail/router announcement described by those reports. It does not establish that the BE18000 was first in every country, sales channel, certification category, or product class.
Was it a certified Wi-Fi 7 router?
No. At the time of the announcement, Wi-Fi 7 certification was not yet available. Wi-Fi NOW described the BE18000 as designed for IEEE 802.11be, the standard then being developed; TechInsights likewise noted that the IEEE standard had not yet been released. The product was therefore an early implementation of the technology associated with Wi-Fi 7, not proof of certification against the finalized standard.

What did H3C say the Magic BE18000 could do?
Announcement-era coverage described the BE18000 as a tri-band device that could operate in the 6 GHz band. Network World reported H3C’s claimed peak throughput of 18,443 Mbps using 320 MHz channels; Wi-Fi NOW reported a peak data rate of 18.443 Gbps and identified Qualcomm’s Networking Pro 1220 platform. These are manufacturer product figures relayed by contemporary reports, not independent tests of real-world throughput.
Multi-Link Operation (MLO) was another prominent Wi-Fi 7 capability discussed in the reporting. It allows a compatible device to use links across multiple channels; the reports described alternating and simultaneous approaches, with potential benefits for throughput and latency. Those are intended benefits, not a guaranteed speed or latency improvement for every router-and-client combination.

The BE18000 belongs to the early phase of Wi-Fi 7 hardware. By January 9, 2024, TP-Link was announcing a wider range of Wi-Fi 7 routers and mesh products, including the Archer BE900, BE800, BE550, and BE230. Its announcement highlighted technologies such as 6 GHz, 320 MHz channels, 4K-QAM, and MLO; those feature and rate descriptions are manufacturer claims, not independent comparative test results. What to consider if you are choosing a Wi-Fi 7 router
The historical “first” label does not make the BE18000 a current buying recommendation. The cited announcements do not establish its present price, stock, or availability. For a current purchase, compare the specific features and performance that match your network rather than relying on a headline peak rate.
Quick Recap
- Supported bands and channel widths: Check which bands and widths the router actually supports, and whether your devices can use them.
- Client compatibility: Wi-Fi 7 features such as MLO require compatible clients; a newer router alone does not give older devices those capabilities.
- Wired ports: Check port speeds if you have multi-gigabit internet, a fast local network, or wired mesh backhaul.
- Coverage: Decide whether one router can cover your home or whether a mesh system better suits its layout.
- Independent testing: Look for tests using identifiable client devices and realistic conditions. Advertised peak rates are not the same as household internet speeds.
