On December 6, 2005, SMC Networks and Senvid announced a bundle that put Senvid’s MioNet remote-access software with products in SMC’s EZ-Stream, EZ Connect, and Barricade networking lines. MioNet was meant to let people reach files and applications on a computer from another MioNet-enabled computer, wherever they were. The bundled service came with 30 days of free use, followed by a reported introductory price of $39.95 per year or $6.95 per month.

What was the SMC Networks and Senvid MioNet deal?

EDN reported that SMC Networks and Senvid agreed to include a copy of Senvid’s MioNet virtual-workplace software with products in SMC’s EZ-Stream, EZ Connect, and Barricade lines. The software was included at no additional cost with the qualifying SMC products, which were expected to be sold in retail stores and online. EDN’s December 6, 2005 report described the partnership as a way to make wireless remote access and file sharing easier and more secure.

How was MioNet supposed to make remote access easier?

MioNet was software for accessing files and applications stored on a computer running MioNet from another computer running MioNet. The computers could be in different physical locations, so users did not have to be on the same local network to reach the host computer’s resources. The announcement characterized the service as more secure, but the report does not provide technical details that would establish particular encryption, authentication, or security guarantees.

Which SMC product lines included MioNet?

The 2005 report named three SMC product lines: EZ-Stream, EZ Connect, and Barricade. It did not identify specific router models or establish that every product in each line included the software; the bundle applied to products described as bundled with MioNet. Current availability of those products, or eligibility for any present-day offer, is not established by the historical report.

What happened to SMC’s later remote-access partnership?

A later SMC partnership addressed a different part of networking. In a February 3, 2011 press release, SMC said it had signed an agreement with ClearAccess to integrate the Powered by ClearAccess software client into SMC broadband gateways, including the SMCD3GNV Multimedia Voice Gateway.

ClearAccess was presented as a gateway-management platform rather than a consumer service for remotely opening files on a personal computer. The release described support for managed Wi-Fi and firewall functions, Wi-Fi signal-strength monitoring, and whole-home parental controls. It also said ClearVision could manage TR-069-compliant gateways and other home or office networking devices across cable, DSL, fiber, and wireless networks.
