The Hacktoberfest Weekend Challenge: Build for a Friend was a short DEV Community software challenge to create a new project using open-source AI to solve a real problem for a friend or loved one. Its entry window ended October 5, 2026, at 6:59 AM UTC, so it is no longer open for submissions.
What was the challenge prompt?
The DEV Community challenge page asked participants to “Build something with open-source AI at its core.” The project also had to address a real need experienced by someone the builder knew and explain why open innovation mattered to that person.
Examples on the page included an allergy-aware meal planner, a language-practice partner for a patient, and a tool that turns a relative’s voice memos into a family recipe book. Those were examples, not required project categories. The central test was whether the software helped a particular person with a genuine problem.
When did the challenge run?
The official contest rules set the entry period from October 2, 2026, at 2:00 AM UTC through October 5, 2026, at 6:59 AM UTC. The challenge page described it as the first of five DEV challenges planned for October 2026.

The DEV Team launch post said winners were expected during the week of October 5, but the official materials cited here do not establish whether results were subsequently announced or who won. The published schedule should not be treated as confirmation of an announcement.
What did an eligible submission need?
Entrants had to build a new project during the entry period; submitting a pull request to an existing project did not qualify. The rules specified these entry components:
Rank #2
- Oktoberfest design. German Flag Eagle Prost guten Tag y'all. If you will party in Munich Germany for Oktoberfest Beer festival or to a local American Octoberfest party this is for you. Prost! German American shirt for men, women.

- A published DEV submission post using the challenge template and the unique
#hf26challengetag. - A newly built project with open-source AI at its core. The rules give examples such as an open-weight model, an open-source agent framework or harness, or local inference.
- A solution aimed at a real problem for a friend or loved one.
- A demo, supplied as a deployed link or video, and a link to the project’s code.
- An explanation of why open-source AI mattered to the project.
The project explanation needed to connect the open components to the person’s needs rather than merely name a model or framework. For example, a builder could describe what the open component enabled in the project and why that mattered for the intended user.
Could entrants work in teams or use AI assistance?
Yes. The challenge FAQ allowed teams of up to four. A team submitted one entry and listed collaborators’ DEV handles. The FAQ also said AI assistance was allowed, provided the other contest rules were followed.
Rank #3
- This fun German drinking design is the perfect gift idea or souvenir for anyone who loves Germany and Oktoberfest. Cheers
- Lightweight, Classic fit, Double-needle sleeve and bottom hem
Entrants had to be at least 18. The FAQ referred geographic-eligibility questions to the full official contest rules, so eligibility should not be inferred from the general challenge description alone.
How were entries judged?
The challenge page listed writing quality as the most heavily weighted criterion, followed by relevance to the prompt and theme, creativity, and technical execution. Partner technology counted for entries competing in partner categories. If entries tied, the contest rules said judges would use positive reactions on the DEV post to decide.
Rank #4
- Fun Octoberfest t shirt was inspired by great German culture. Look great wearing this tee while drinking beer and eating brats and schnitzel at the festival. Tees shirts for toddler child children adult men women.
- These tshirts will look good while wearing your costume hat apron or suspenders. This cool graphic design novelty tshirt will look great at the festival in Louisiana New Braunfels Texas or Florida or anywhere. Celebrate. Eat brat. Great Texan gift idea
- Lightweight, Classic fit, Double-needle sleeve and bottom hem
For a builder planning within the brief window, that makes a focused project easier to explain and demonstrate than an overambitious one. A clear account of the person’s problem, the role of open-source AI, and the finished demo directly supports the stated prompt and judging criteria; these are practical implications, not additional eligibility rules.

The launch post also said valid submissions would receive a completion badge. The challenge page listed participant credits and promotional codes from Tinker, Render, Backboard, and ElevenLabs, and directed participants to the Hacktoberfest promotions page. Those listings do not establish that an offer remains redeemable now.
Partner-category awards named services including ElevenLabs, Entire, GitHub Copilot, Mastra, MongoDB Atlas, Sentry Agent Tracing, SerpApi, Temporal, and Tiger Data. Using a partner service was not a general entry requirement; partner technology was relevant to judging only for partner-category entries.
Could a pull request to an existing project count?
No. The challenge required a new project built during the entry period; a pull request to an existing project did not qualify as an entry.
