The first chiral molecule reported in interstellar space was propylene oxide, also called methyloxirane (CH₃CHCH₂O). Astronomers detected it in radio absorption toward Sagittarius B2(N), a massive star-forming region near the Galactic Center. The finding established that the molecule is present in interstellar gas; it did not show that one mirror-image form was more abundant, or that life exists or began there.

What was the first chiral molecule found in space?

It was propylene oxide, a small organic molecule with two mirror-image forms, or enantiomers. The forms are chiral because, like left and right hands, they cannot be superimposed on one another. The molecule is also known as methyloxirane and has the formula CH₃CHCH₂O.

McGuire and colleagues reported its detection in a 2016 paper in Science. The result was the first report of a chiral molecule in interstellar space, not a discovery of biological material.

Where was propylene oxide detected?

The signal came from Sagittarius B2(N), a massive star-forming region near the center of the Milky Way. The molecule was detected in a cold, extended molecular shell around embedded massive protostellar clusters—not in a hot core, planet, meteorite, or living system.

The matching spectral feature was consistent with a source velocity of about 64 km/s, as reported by McGuire and colleagues. That figure describes the velocity context of the source; it is not a distance or a measure of how much propylene oxide was present.

How did astronomers identify the molecule?

The team used radio observations to look for rotational transitions—specific frequencies at which the molecule absorbs radiation. Their analysis predicted detectable low-temperature absorption features near 12.1, 12.8, and 14.0 GHz. Finding several expected lines in the same astronomical context made the identification stronger than relying on a single feature.

  1. Green Bank Telescope observations: Two transitions near 12.8 and 14.0 GHz appeared in data from the Green Bank Telescope’s PRIMOS survey.
  2. Parkes Radio Telescope observation: Radio-frequency interference affected the 12.1 GHz feature at Green Bank, so the team observed that transition with the Parkes Radio Telescope. It aligned with the roughly 64 km/s velocity associated with Sagittarius B2(N).
  3. Combined evidence: The three observed transitions and their consistent astronomical context supported the identification of propylene oxide.

The Cologne Database for Molecular Spectroscopy lists the transitions at approximately 12.07 GHz (Parkes 65 m dish), 12.84 GHz, and 14.05 GHz (Green Bank 100 m dish). It gives an inferred rotational temperature of about 5 K. That is the temperature inferred for the molecule’s rotational excitation, not the temperature of the entire star-forming region.

Did astronomers find one molecular handedness more often?

No. The 2016 detection identified propylene oxide but did not determine the relative abundance of its two enantiomers. In other words, it did not show whether the interstellar gas contained more of one mirror-image form than the other.

A 2022 laboratory study examined gas-phase propylene oxide’s chiroptical properties and noted this limit of the astronomical observations. Laboratory spectroscopy and proposed mechanisms involving circularly polarized light can help frame future questions, but they are not measurements of the enantiomer ratio in Sagittarius B2(N).

Why does the discovery matter—and what does it not prove?

Finding a chiral molecule in interstellar gas gives researchers a target for studying where such molecules form and whether star-forming environments could contribute to prebiotic chemistry. It does not demonstrate a biological process, establish that life exists beyond Earth, or explain how biological molecules on Earth came to favor one handedness—a phenomenon called homochirality.

The distinction is important: detecting a molecule with mirror-image forms is not the same as detecting an imbalance between those forms. The discovery opened a way to investigate that question; it did not answer it.
