There is no universal winner. The best phone you ever owned is the one that made everyday tasks easy and kept doing so; the worst is the one whose failures, compromises, or cost repeatedly got in the way. A phone can be a technical standout and still be a poor fit for one person, while an inexpensive model can earn lasting affection by being dependable.

Why the answer depends on ownership, not just specifications

A launch review can compare a phone’s display, processor, camera, and features. It cannot fully show how the battery will age, whether the ports and buttons will hold up, how updates will affect performance, or whether the device remains pleasant after months of ordinary use.

Price and circumstances matter, too. A phone bought new at full price is a different proposition from the same model bought used, subsidized, or supplied by an employer. Network coverage, carrier software, accessories, repairs, and individual defective units can also shape an owner’s experience.

That is why one person can remember a model fondly while another remembers it as a mistake. The most directly relevant discussion, an AnandTech forum thread from 2017, includes both positive and negative accounts of phones such as the BlackBerry Pearl, iPhone 7, Nexus 6P, Nokia Lumia 1520, Galaxy S7, Galaxy Note 7, and first-generation Moto G. Those are individual recollections, not a representative reliability survey or a verdict on every unit of each model. Read the AnandTech owners’ discussion.

What makes a phone someone’s best?

Usually, it is not one headline feature. It is a combination of useful qualities that continue to matter once the novelty fades.

  • Reliability: It starts, connects, and runs the apps its owner needs without recurring crashes, freezes, or hardware trouble.
  • Battery life: It lasts through a typical day when new, and its battery remains adequate—or can be replaced affordably—as the phone ages.
  • Connectivity: Calls, mobile data, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS work reliably in the places the owner uses them.
  • Everyday speed: Common tasks feel responsive; benchmark scores matter less if the phone stutters, reloads apps, or overheats in routine use.
  • Useful camera: It captures the moments the owner cares about, including moving subjects or low-light scenes, rather than merely producing impressive results in ideal conditions.
  • Comfort and fit: Size, weight, buttons, keyboard, stylus, or folding design suit the owner’s hands and habits.
  • Dependable software: The interface is understandable, updates do not undermine stability, and support lasts long enough for the owner’s needs.
  • Good value: The experience justifies the price paid, including storage, accessories, repairs, and any replacement costs.

Owners’ accounts in the AnandTech thread praise phones for reasons including keyboard ergonomics, speed for their era, camera quality, battery life, stylus or expandable storage, stable software, customization, and value. These are useful examples of what people value, not controlled product comparisons. More owner examples appear on the discussion’s second page.

What turns a phone into someone’s worst?

A disappointing feature is not necessarily a disaster. The worst phones tend to be remembered for problems that interrupt use repeatedly, or for a gap between what the buyer expected and what the phone delivered.

  • Material: This wall-mounted mobile phone holder is made of high quality materials, which is very safe, environmentally friendly and durable.
  • Instability: Random reboots, frequent app crashes, freezes, or overheating make even basic use unpredictable.
  • Weak battery endurance: A phone that needs constant charging from the start, or becomes impractical as its battery degrades, can dominate the ownership experience.
  • Unreliable reception or calls: Poor service may come from the handset, a carrier variant, network compatibility, or local coverage, so identify the cause before blaming the model.
  • Performance and capacity limits: Insufficient memory or storage can lead to constant app reloads, slowdowns, and difficult trade-offs over what to keep.
  • Camera or display shortcomings: A weak camera in real-world conditions or a display that is hard to see can matter more than a strong specification sheet.
  • Software and support problems: Bloat, an awkward interface, short-lived updates, incompatible apps, or a discontinued service can make usable hardware feel obsolete.
  • Bad value or poor support: A high purchase price, costly repairs, carrier restrictions, or an unsatisfactory replacement process can turn a flaw into regret.

Participants in the AnandTech thread describe crashes, spontaneous reboots, poor battery life, weak reception, Bluetooth trouble, limited memory, and software complaints. Such reports show the kinds of problems owners notice; they do not establish how often a whole model failed. A single defective device should not be treated as proof that every unit was unreliable.

Judge older phones by the era they served

“Best ever” can mean different things. A phone might have been the best available in its release period, the most satisfying to own over several years, the best value, or simply the most memorable. “Worst” might mean a poor purchase for its price, a device that aged badly, or a model that failed to meet expectations at launch.

Keep the comparison fair: do not fault an older phone for lacking a feature that did not exist or was not expected when it launched. Instead, ask whether it performed well for its time, whether it remained useful, and what changed when its software, battery, network, or app ecosystem aged.

Nostalgia belongs in the answer, but it is different from a performance judgment. A first smartphone, an unusual keyboard, or a device associated with a meaningful period can be an emotional favorite without being the fastest, most reliable, or best-value phone.

Useful categories for naming a best or worst phone

Rather than forcing a single universal ranking, describe what a phone did best—or where it let you down.

Category What to consider
Best overall experience Balance, reliability, comfort, and few persistent frustrations.
Best budget phone Price paid, dependable basics, support, and the cost of keeping it usable.
Best battery phone Real-world endurance when new and how well battery life held up.
Best camera phone Consistency in the lighting and situations the owner actually encounters.
Best compact phone One-handed comfort without an unacceptable compromise in endurance or usability.
Best long-term phone Updates, battery replacement, durability, and repair costs.
Best enthusiast phone Customization, developer support, accessories, or distinctive hardware.
Worst reliability experience Repeated failures, crashes, or unreliable connectivity, distinguished from an isolated bad unit.
Worst value or launch disappointment Whether the experience matched the price and expectations at the time.
Worst aging experience Whether battery wear, discontinued support, or ecosystem changes made it unusable.

A practical way to rate a phone you owned

Score each category from 1 to 5, then explain which categories mattered most to you. Do not treat the total as an objective ranking: a poor camera may be irrelevant to one owner and decisive to another.

Criterion Question to ask
Reliability Did it work consistently without crashes or hardware failures?
Battery Did it last through your day, and how did that change with age?
Performance Was it responsive in the tasks you actually did?
Camera Did it get usable results in your real photo and video situations?
Software Was it stable, understandable, and supported for as long as you needed?
Durability Did the body, screen, ports, and buttons withstand normal use?
Connectivity Were reception, calls, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS dependable?
Value Was the experience worth the price and any repair or replacement costs?
Fit Did its size, features, ecosystem, and form factor suit your habits?

Before deciding, note the purchase price, date and market; whether the phone was new, used, subsidized, or employer-issued; how long you kept it; repair costs; and what replaced it. Then ask whether the phone was still usable when you moved on, what you missed from its predecessor, and whether you would buy it again. This separates the phone’s shortcomings from a bad refurbished unit, an unsuitable carrier version, an accessory problem, or a change in your needs.

What to check before replacing a frustrating phone

  • Battery trouble: Compare expected endurance and the availability and cost of battery service before replacing the whole device.
  • Crashes or slowdowns: Check software support and ordinary-use performance; more powerful hardware is not a substitute for stable software.
  • Poor reception: Verify network and carrier compatibility for the exact model and variant, and consider whether coverage is the real issue.
  • Insufficient space: Choose storage for your actual app, photo, and video use; extra capacity can cost more upfront.
  • High cost: A midrange or budget phone may meet basic needs without paying for premium camera or performance features you will not use.
  • Damage: Compare repair and replacement economics before assuming a trade-in will be accepted at its advertised value.

For a current U.S. example, Samsung’s March 2026 MSRP document lists the unlocked Galaxy A17 5G, 128GB, at $199.99; the Galaxy A56 5G at $499.99 for 128GB and $549.99 for 256GB; and the Galaxy S25 FE at $649.99 for 128GB and $709.99 for 256GB. For a form-factor comparison, the same MSRP document lists the Galaxy Z Flip7 from $1,099.99 and the Galaxy Z Fold7 from $1,999.99 for the stated base storage tiers. Foldables may appeal to buyers who prioritize a folding design or multitasking, but those listed prices alone do not show whether the form factor, repair costs, or durability suit a particular owner.

Samsung’s trade-in terms are conditional: eligible devices generally must power on and hold a charge, have a functioning display, meet damage and blacklist requirements, be factory-reset, and have software locks disabled. Check the current Samsung trade-in requirements and direct-purchase information before counting a credit toward the cost. Eligibility and offers can change.
