Ao Air announced its Atmos Faceware in January 2020 at a launch price of $350, pitching a fan-driven device that would filter air in front of the wearer’s nose and mouth. That price and the product claims are historical: current availability, pricing, certification, and filter supply have not been established. The central question is not just whether the design looked different, but whether its protection was demonstrated and how it compared with a properly fitted, NIOSH-approved respirator.
What was the Atmos Faceware?
The Atmos Faceware was a personal air-filtering device introduced by Ao Air at CES in January 2020. Contemporary coverage described fans pushing filtered air into a pocket in front of the wearer’s nose and mouth, rather than relying on the conventional close-fitting face seal of a respirator. Futurism’s January 8, 2020 report and designboom’s launch coverage reported a $350 announced price.
Ao Air’s U.S. head, Mikal Peveto, told Engadget, as quoted by Futurism, “It’s 50 times better [than a regular mask].” That was a company representative’s claim, not an independently established comparison in the cited report. The phrase “cashing in on climate change” is a headline framing; the launch reporting establishes a product announcement and price, not a measured conclusion about the company’s motives or profits.

Was the Atmos protection claim independently established?
Not in the evidence reported at launch. Futurism said Ao Air had not demonstrated that its filters were more protective than standard NIOSH-certified masks. The company’s commissioned study was unpublished and had not been peer reviewed at that time. This is a launch-era evidence caveat, not a statement about whether later studies or product changes occurred; those are not established by the available reporting.

The cited launch coverage does not establish that Atmos had NIOSH approval, that it achieved the seal expected of a tight-fitting respirator, or what ongoing replacement-filter access would be. Nor does it establish current sales status or price.
What protection is recommended for wildfire smoke?
Washington State’s workplace wildfire-smoke guidance says: “A NIOSH-approved N95 filtering-facepiece respirator, shown in the image below, is the minimum level of protection for wildfire smoke.” The statement is specifically about workplace wildfire-smoke protection, and the guidance emphasizes fit: smoke can leak around a poorly fitting respirator. Follow the respirator manufacturer’s instructions for selecting and wearing it. Washington State’s wildfire-smoke rule and appendix also explain that particulate respirators do not protect against gases or vapors, and do not supply oxygen.

A “mask” is a broad everyday term; a respirator is designed to reduce the wearer’s exposure to airborne contaminants when the right device is used correctly and fits appropriately. A loose or unsealed air pocket should not be treated as interchangeable with a tight-fitting, NIOSH-approved N95. The state guidance applies to workplace wildfire smoke, so readers should follow the rules and public-health advice that apply to their own location and situation.

Indoor air cleaning is a separate way to reduce particles in a room or home; it is not the same thing as wearing a respirator outdoors. A 2022 National Academies chapter summarizing the EPA’s review reports that portable air cleaners often reduced indoor PM2.5 concentrations by around 50% on average across residential measurement studies. That average is not a guarantee for a particular room, device, or wildfire-smoke event. The National Academies’ 2022 discussion of indoor filtration also summarizes substantially variable results for HVAC filtration: one California test house had a 90% PM2.5 reduction under typical ambient conditions using HVAC filtration with high-efficiency MERV filters, while a separate analysis found about 40% average in-home effectiveness, varying widely among homes.

Those figures illustrate why results depend on the home, room, HVAC system, and filter setup. They do not establish the performance of Atmos or any particular air cleaner. Indoor filtration may complement personal protection, but it does not make a respirator unnecessary when one is called for.

What should you compare before choosing a smoke-protection device?
- Certification and target: Check whether the device is NIOSH-approved and what contaminants it is intended to filter. The Washington guidance identifies a NIOSH-approved N95 as the minimum level for workplace wildfire-smoke protection.
- Fit: A tight-fitting respirator must seal appropriately to reduce leakage. An unsealed design is not automatically equivalent, regardless of its fan or filter claims.
- Evidence: Distinguish independent, published testing from company statements. At launch, the cited Atmos coverage reported an unpublished, non-peer-reviewed commissioned study and no demonstration of superiority over standard NIOSH-certified masks.
- Use case: A wearable respirator addresses the wearer’s exposure; portable air cleaners and HVAC filtration address particles indoors. They serve different purposes.
- Ongoing access: Consider replacement filters, device availability, and recurring costs. The cited sources do not establish Atmos’s current availability, price, or replacement-filter supply.
