HBO Go was an older HBO streaming service; it is not the current U.S. app for streaming HBO. HBO’s current U.S. guidance points viewers to HBO Max for streaming, while also listing the HBO channel and HBO on Demand. Outside the United States, availability and subscription options vary by country.
What was HBO Go?
HBO Go was a streaming service associated with HBO programming. HBO Max launched in the United States on May 27, 2020, as a direct-to-consumer service that included HBO programming. WarnerMedia said at the time that many existing HBO and HBO NOW subscribers could access HBO Max at no additional charge during the launch transition; that 2020 statement does not establish current billing or eligibility.

A cable-provider notice listed July 31, 2020, as HBO Go’s discontinuation date. That notice supports the date for that provider, but does not establish a universal worldwide cutoff.
How can you watch HBO programming now?
In the United States
HBO lists three ways to watch its programming in the U.S.: the HBO channel, HBO on Demand, and HBO Max. HBO Max is the streaming option. You can subscribe directly or access it through a partner, depending on your circumstances.

Outside the United States
HBO Max is available in selected regions, including parts of Latin America and the Caribbean, Asia Pacific, and Europe. Coverage and ways to subscribe differ by location, so check HBO Max’s current availability information for your country before choosing an access route.
Steps to start streaming
- Check availability: Confirm that HBO Max is offered in your country.
- Check device compatibility: Consult HBO Max’s current supported-device guidance before installing. Do not assume an older HBO Go app or device setup remains compatible.
- Install HBO Max: On a supported device, open its app store, search for HBO Max, and download the app.
- Choose how to subscribe or sign in: New subscribers can sign up through HBO Max or a partner, with options varying by location. If you already have access through a provider, follow that provider’s current sign-in instructions.
Will an old HBO Go account or subscription still work?
Do not assume that an old HBO Go login will sign you into HBO Max or that a former HBO Go subscription automatically includes current HBO Max access. WarnerMedia’s no-additional-charge statement applied to many HBO and HBO NOW subscribers during the 2020 launch transition; it was not a promise of present-day account eligibility. Check your current provider or HBO Max account details for billing and sign-in options.
