AOL Alto was a cloud-based email client that brought several existing email accounts into one web workspace. AOL opened it to a limited preview on October 18, 2012; its distinguishing feature was a set of visual groupings called “stacks,” and it did not require users to create a new Alto email address. Alto was discontinued in 2017.

What was AOL Alto?

Alto was a separate AOL email product aimed at people who felt overwhelmed by their inboxes. Rather than replace a user’s existing address, it connected accounts from Gmail, Yahoo Mail, AOL Mail, iCloud, and .Mac/.me. The service brought those accounts into a single web-accessible workspace, with support for up to five accounts per user.

AOL opened Alto in limited preview on October 18, 2012. The company presented it as an alternative experience for email organization, not as a replacement for AOL Mail. AOL senior vice president of mail and mobile David Temkin said the company intended to support Alto and AOL Mail as distinct products for different audiences, according to TechCrunch’s launch coverage.

How did Alto aggregate Gmail and other accounts?

Users connected supported existing accounts to Alto instead of signing up for a new Alto address. Once connected, messages from those accounts could be viewed and organized in Alto’s shared workspace. AOL’s launch description listed Gmail, Yahoo Mail, AOL Mail, iCloud, and .Mac/.me as supported services; it did not describe Alto as a new email provider in its own right.

What were Alto stacks?

Stacks were Alto’s visual way to collect related messages, making selected types of email easier to find without relying only on a conventional inbox list. Alto automatically grouped messages into categories such as photos, attachments, daily deals, social-network notifications, and retailer bulletins.

Automatic stacks

Alto identified messages that fit its categories and gathered them into corresponding stacks. This made the feature useful for finding a type of content—such as a photo or deal—across a busy inbox rather than locating each message in chronological order.

Is AOL Alto still available?

No. Oath announced the discontinuation of Alto Mail in 2017. Contemporary reporting said distribution of the mobile apps would end on November 9, 2017, and support would end on December 10, 2017. Alto is therefore a discontinued historical service, not a current option for aggregating email accounts.
