Valeo’s Hybrid4All was a proposed 48-volt mild-hybrid system for automakers to integrate into conventional gasoline or diesel cars. It was not presented as a kit for owners to retrofit into an existing car. The concept paired a compact motor-generator with a combustion engine to capture energy while slowing down and provide extra torque during acceleration.
What was Valeo Hybrid4All?
Hybrid4All was an OEM-oriented electrification architecture described in trade coverage in 2012. Rather than replacing a car’s engine, it was intended to let manufacturers adapt a conventional powertrain with a 48V motor-generator. Valeo presented 48V as a lower-cost, more easily packaged approach than higher-voltage hybrid systems.
The system combined enhanced stop-start, regenerative braking and torque assistance. The proposed motor-generator could be positioned on the accessory drive belt, after the gearbox, or between the engine and gearbox, depending on the vehicle’s design. These were possible packaging configurations, not instructions for installing the system in a particular car. EDN’s 2012 report describes the architecture.

How was the 48V mild hybrid supposed to work?
- Capture energy: During deceleration, the motor-generator acts as a generator and recovers some energy that would otherwise be lost as heat through braking.
- Reuse energy: The system can use stored electrical energy to provide torque assistance as the combustion engine accelerates.
- Support stop-start: Enhanced stop-start is part of the concept, reducing the time the engine needs to run while the vehicle is stopped.
The motor-generator’s location affects how a manufacturer integrates it with the engine and transmission. Hybrid4All’s descriptions do not establish that the car could drive on electric power alone.

What performance and emissions benefits did Valeo claim?
The figures published in 2012 are historical company claims, not independent test results or current, independently validated performance guarantees.
| Reported figure | Qualification |
|---|---|
| More than 15% fuel savings | Valeo claim for an average gasoline-engine vehicle, as reported by EDN in 2012. Source. |
| Up to 15 kW motor-generator power | Valeo claim reported by EDN in 2012. Source. |
| 15% CO2 reduction | Henri Trintignac, Valeo’s director of Electric Vehicle Activity, stated in 2012: “This system enables to reduce CO2 emissions by 15%.” Source. |
| 15.5% CO2 reduction | Valeo claim for a Peugeot 207 1.6 L THP prototype, reported by EDN in 2012. Source. |
The reported percentage figures do not establish what a present-day owner would save. The available coverage does not provide independent test results or enough detail to treat the claims as comparable guarantees across vehicles and driving conditions.
Was Hybrid4All fitted to production cars?
The 2012 report identified the Renault Twingo, Renault Clio and Opel Corsa as intended small-car applications, and said equipped cars were expected to be available in 2017. That was a forecast made in 2012, not confirmation that those models—or any production vehicles—actually received Hybrid4All. The sources available here do not establish its current production status or availability.
Can you retrofit Hybrid4All into a normal car?
There is no documented consumer retrofit kit in the cited coverage. Hybrid4All was described as a system for automakers to integrate into vehicle powertrains, with motor placement and electrical integration depending on the design. The reports do not establish a retail kit, vehicle compatibility list, installation procedure, price or certification for retrofits.
Rank #3
That means the historical concept is not a basis for buying a generic 48V battery or alternator and expecting a conventional car to become a hybrid. A retrofit claim would need vehicle-specific documentation from a manufacturer or qualified installer; none is established for Hybrid4All by these sources.
