“Unavailable” means a player is not available to participate in the upcoming game under the reporting policy that applies to that team and matchup. It does not necessarily mean the player is injured. Depending on the conference’s rules, the category can also cover illness, suspension, eligibility or legal issues, or personal and family matters. A report generally gives a status, not a diagnosis or explanation.
Does “unavailable” mean the player is injured?
No. An availability report tells fans whether a player is expected to participate; it is not, by itself, a medical report. For example, the SEC and Big 12 define “Out” broadly for a player who will not play, including reasons beyond injury. The ACC likewise permits a player to be listed when availability is uncertain for reasons such as illness, eligibility, or personal and family matters.
Do not infer a specific cause from the label. The SEC says its report contains only the athlete’s name and participation status, while the ACC says it reports status rather than the specific reason. A separate, attributable statement would be needed to establish why a player is unavailable. SEC policy text; ACC policy announcement.

What do the status labels mean?
The vocabulary and the point in the reporting schedule both matter. “Out” is a clear statement that the player will not play under the SEC and Big 12 definitions; other labels describe uncertainty or an expected likelihood of playing. The percentages used in some policies are defined status labels, not measured probabilities or guaranteed forecasts.
#1 Best Overall
SEC
The SEC policy uses Probable, Questionable, Doubtful, and Out in its reports. Its policy definitions attach 75% to Probable, 50% to Questionable, 25% to Doubtful, and 0% to Out. These are policy-defined chance-to-play labels, not independent medical or statistical predictions. SEC availability-report policy.
Big 12
The Big 12 lists Available, Probable, Questionable, Doubtful, and Out during the week. Its game-day labels are Available, Game Time Decision, and Out. The applicable category can therefore change as the report moves from a midweek update to game day. Big 12 availability-report policy.
Big Ten
Under the 2026 Big Ten football policy, midweek reports use Probable, Questionable, Doubtful, Out, or Out (1st Half); game-day reports use Game Time Decision, Out, or Out (1st Half). “Out (1st Half)” is a distinct listed category, so read the report’s exact label rather than reducing every status to simply available or unavailable. Big Ten 2026 reporting policy.
Why might an available player not be listed?
Omission does not have one universal meaning across college football. The SEC, subject to policy exemptions, and the Big Ten explicitly say athletes who are not listed are considered available. Do not apply that interpretation automatically to a report governed by another conference’s rules; check the relevant policy. SEC availability-report policy; Big Ten 2026 reporting policy.

When can a report change?
A listing is tied to a particular game and reporting stage. A midweek status is not necessarily the final one: the conferences cited here provide later updates, including game-day reports. When discussing a player’s status, identify the matchup and the report date or stage so readers do not mistake an earlier update for the final listing.
- SEC: For a Saturday game, the policy calls for an initial report Wednesday, updates Thursday and Friday, and a game-day update no later than 90 minutes before kickoff. The policy applies to SEC games; nonconference reporting is optional.
- ACC: Football reports for conference games are due two days before the game, with updates the day before and on game day. The ACC announcement says game-day reports are submitted two hours before each game.
- Big 12: Starting in 2025–26, conference-game football reports are daily beginning three days before each game, posted at 9 p.m. CT, with a final report 90 minutes before kickoff.
- Big Ten: The 2026 policy requires four reports for games against conference opponents: three reports by 8 p.m. ET/7 p.m. CT/5 p.m. PT on the three days before kickoff, then a final report two hours before kickoff.
These schedules and categories are conference-specific, not a single NCAA-wide set of labels. For the underlying timing and scope, see the SEC policy, ACC announcement, Big 12 policy, and Big Ten 2026 policy.

How to read a listing accurately
- Identify the conference and matchup. Reporting rules can differ, and some policies cover conference games while treating nonconference games differently.
- Read the exact status label. “Out,” “Questionable,” and “Game Time Decision” are not interchangeable.
- Check when the report was issued. A later update may supersede a midweek status.
- Separate status from cause. Unless another reliable source identifies the reason, do not assume the player is injured or speculate about a personal, eligibility, or disciplinary matter.
- Check the league’s omission rule. An unlisted player counts as available under some policies, but not necessarily every conference’s policy.
Is a college report the same as an NFL injury report?
No. College conferences set their own reporting terminology, timing, and disclosure rules. The Associated Press’s 2023 description of the then-new Big Ten approach noted that it was less detailed than NFL reporting and did not require a reason. That is historical context about that policy at that time, not a universal current NCAA rule. Associated Press report, August 25, 2023.
