If your music and videos already play, you do not need to install a general “codec pack.” Ubuntu supplies common playback support, while some formats, devices and commercial DVDs require separate components. A codec is the software that decodes a particular audio or video stream; the filename extension only identifies a container and does not tell you whether your player has the required decoder. Check the actual format, Ubuntu release, desktop flavor and application first, then install support for the specific task.
What a media codec is
A codec (coder-decoder) converts a compressed audio or video stream into data a player can render, and can encode raw media when you create a file. A video file may contain one codec for pictures and another for sound. The surrounding container—such as MP4, MKV or WebM—holds those streams, subtitles and metadata. Two files with the same extension can therefore need different decoders.
Ubuntu applications commonly access codecs through GStreamer or another multimedia framework. The player, framework plug-ins and operating-system packages must all support the stream. A file can fail even when Ubuntu itself has a decoder if the particular application does not expose it, if the file is damaged, or if hardware-acceleration support is unavailable.

“.mp4” describes a container, not a guaranteed video format. One MP4 might contain H.264 video and AAC audio; another might contain HEVC/H.265 video or an audio stream your player cannot decode. Inspect the media details in the player or with a media-information utility when the extension gives no useful clue.

Does a normal Ubuntu installation need extra codecs?
Usually not. Ubuntu aims to include completely free software by default, so some proprietary or otherwise restricted formats are not enabled in a standard installation. If every file you use plays correctly, changing codec packages adds no benefit and can create unnecessary maintenance.
Optional support in Ubuntu 26.04 LTS
The Ubuntu 26.04 LTS installer presents a checkbox labeled Install third-party software for graphics and Wi-Fi hardware and additional media formats. The release notes say this package set includes a non-free AAC codec for supported Bluetooth headsets. The optional-codec update was added in Ubuntu 25.10 and carried into the 26.04 installer workflow.
Selecting that option does not enable every codec, make every application compatible, or guarantee that every file will play. It is a convenient baseline for the formats covered by Ubuntu’s package set; a particular file may still require a different decoder or may be protected by copy-control technology.

The community “restricted extras” route
The Ubuntu Community Help page describes ubuntu-restricted-extras as an easy-install path for stock Ubuntu. On a supported release, the usual command is:
sudo apt install ubuntu-restricted-extras
Package names differ among Ubuntu flavors, and the Community Help page is maintained separately from the release notes. Confirm the package for your release and desktop before running a command. Installing this meta-package is broader than fixing one identified format, so use it when you want the common restricted-media bundle rather than a narrowly targeted decoder.

First decide what you are trying to do
“I need codecs” can describe four different jobs. Choosing the right one avoids installing playback software for an indexing problem or treating DVD encryption as an ordinary missing decoder.
| Task | What must be supported | Typical Ubuntu action | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Play a local audio or video file | The stream’s decoder in the application’s multimedia stack | Use the application’s codec prompt or install support for the identified format | The container extension does not prove codec compatibility |
| Use a Bluetooth headset | The audio codec negotiated by the headset and system | Use the Ubuntu installer’s optional third-party media support when applicable | The 26.04 notes specifically mention non-free AAC for supported headsets, not every Bluetooth device |
| Index files in LocalSearch | Extractor components for audio/video, ISO and certain office archives | Install the appropriate localsearch-extractor packages |
Extractors improve indexing; they are not a general playback codec bundle |
| Play a commercial DVD | DVD navigation, MPEG support and, for most commercial discs, decryption | Follow Ubuntu Help’s DVD package and libdvd-pkg workflow |
Copy protection, region settings, hardware and local law can still prevent playback |
| Improve high-resolution playback performance | A working decoder plus a compatible VA-API, Vulkan or vendor GPU path | Verify basic software playback first, then troubleshoot hardware acceleration | Results vary by Intel, AMD and NVIDIA hardware and driver |
How to troubleshoot a file that will not play
- Identify the real stream format. Open the file’s media information and record the video codec, audio codec, channel layout and, if shown, profile or level. Do not rely only on the extension.
- Test a known-good file. Play a file in a format you have used successfully. If it works, the problem is probably limited to the original file or one of its streams. If nothing plays, investigate the player, audio device, permissions or installation instead of immediately adding codecs.
- Try the application’s installation prompt. Ubuntu’s GStreamer test plan uses an HEVC/H.265 sample to exercise a codec-installation wizard. If your player offers a prompt for the missing format, read which package it proposes and confirm that it matches your Ubuntu release.
- Check another player only as a diagnostic. A second application can show whether the issue is application-specific. Different players bundle or expose different multimedia frameworks, so a successful test does not prove that every application supports the same stream.
- Separate decoding from acceleration. First establish that the file can be decoded in software. Only then investigate VA-API or Vulkan paths, driver versions and GPU selection. Ubuntu’s GStreamer test cases use different checks for Intel/AMD and NVIDIA hardware; those examples are not a guarantee for an individual computer.
- Apply the smallest package change. Install support for the identified task, restart the application and test again. Avoid stacking unrelated codec bundles, which can make it harder to determine which component fixed—or caused—the problem.
Installing support for ordinary media
Use the player’s codec wizard first
For a normal local file, the application’s suggested package is the most context-aware option because it knows which decoder is missing. Read the format name before accepting. HEVC/H.265 is a common example that may trigger such a wizard. If no prompt appears, identify the stream manually and check whether a package for your Ubuntu release provides it.
Use the optional installer setting on a fresh system
When installing Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, select Install third-party software for graphics and Wi-Fi hardware and additional media formats if you need the formats covered by that option, including AAC support for supported Bluetooth headsets. You can leave it unchecked when your existing files already work and add a narrowly targeted package later.
Use a flavor-appropriate package
Kubuntu, Xubuntu and Lubuntu may use different meta-package names from stock Ubuntu. Community documentation lists flavor-specific alternatives, but package availability can change between releases. Check your flavor’s current package information rather than copying a command written for another edition.
Why DVDs are a separate problem
Ubuntu Help states: “DVD support cannot be provided by default in Ubuntu due to legal and technical restrictions.” A commercial disc is often encrypted. Installing an MPEG or menu decoder addresses only ordinary media formats; it does not supply the decryption capability needed to read protected content.

Documented Ubuntu DVD workflow
Ubuntu Help names these packages for its DVD procedure:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
libdvdnav4libdvdread8gstreamer1.0-plugins-badgstreamer1.0-plugins-uglylibdvd-pkg
After installing the packages, run:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure libdvd-pkg
Confirm the prompt to build and install libdvdcss2, as described by Ubuntu Help. Package versions and dependencies can differ by Ubuntu release, so verify that the named packages are available before proceeding.
Legal and technical limits
Ubuntu warns that use of unlicensed DVD-decryption software may not be permitted in some countries. Copyright and circumvention rules vary by jurisdiction; confirm that you are legally entitled to use the method where you live and with the disc you own.
DVD playback can also fail because of a disc’s region setting, copy protection, a damaged disc or a player that lacks DVD-menu support. Ubuntu’s help topics identify missing codec support, copy protection and DVD region as separate causes. Installing the packages above cannot change a disc’s region lock or repair physical damage.
You may need a drive
A computer without an optical drive cannot read a physical DVD. An external USB DVD drive can provide the hardware connection, but it does not install codecs, decrypt a disc, bypass a region restriction or resolve legal limits. Check that the drive is recognized by Ubuntu before troubleshooting software.

Playback codecs versus LocalSearch indexing
Ubuntu 26.04 treats file indexing as a different task from playback. To let LocalSearch index audio and video files, ISO images and certain ZIP-compressed office files, install the relevant extractor components:
localsearch-extractor-{ffmpeg,iso,office}
The brace form denotes the three package names: localsearch-extractor-ffmpeg, localsearch-extractor-iso and localsearch-extractor-office. These packages extract metadata and searchable text for LocalSearch. They do not constitute a universal instruction to install codecs for watching a video, and installing them will not fix a player that cannot decode a stream.
Hardware acceleration: solve it after decoding works
Modern video playback may use the CPU or a GPU. Hardware acceleration can reduce processor load and improve high-resolution playback, but it introduces dependencies on the GPU vendor, kernel, graphics driver, display server and application. Ubuntu’s GStreamer test plan has separate VA-API and Vulkan checks for Intel/AMD hardware and different NVIDIA examples.
If software playback works but frames drop or the CPU is overloaded, enable acceleration in the player only after confirming that the driver is installed and the decoder supports the stream. If acceleration causes a black picture, crashes or corrupted frames, disable it temporarily and return to software decoding while checking driver and application compatibility. A successful acceleration test on one GPU model does not establish support for another.
Release, flavor and application checks
- Release: Package names and available versions change. Commands written for Ubuntu 26.04 may not apply unchanged to an older LTS or an interim release.
- Flavor: Stock Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu and Lubuntu can use different meta-packages and default players.
- Application: A decoder available to GStreamer may not be enabled by a particular player, and a player’s bundled framework may differ from the desktop default.
- Media source: A local file, network stream and encrypted DVD have different failure modes. Test them separately.
- Architecture and drivers: Hardware acceleration and proprietary components can vary between systems even on the same Ubuntu release.
Common mistakes and fixes
Installing a “complete codec pack” before identifying the format
There is no single package that guarantees support for every codec, container, application and protected disc. Identify the stream and install only what addresses it.

Assuming MP4 means H.264
MP4 is a container. Inspect the video and audio streams; HEVC/H.265 or an unusual audio codec may be the actual incompatibility.
Treating DVD encryption as a missing codec
Commercial DVDs commonly need decryption and navigation support in addition to decoders. Follow the separate DVD workflow and consider region and legal restrictions.
Installing LocalSearch extractors to fix playback
Extractor packages make content searchable. They do not replace the decoder used by a media player.

When you should leave the system alone
Do not install extra media packages simply because an online guide recommends them. If your target files play, your Bluetooth headset connects with the expected quality, and you do not need DVD or LocalSearch features, the existing installation is already meeting the requirement. Revisit the decision only when a specific format, device or task demonstrates a real gap.
